Overview

The Department of Veterinary Clinical and Life Sciences (VCLS) in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at Utah State University (USU) is seeking applicants for two assistant, associate, or full professor positions in veterinary microbiology and immunology. The CVM is looking for one individual with expertise in bacteriology/immunology/infectious diseases and one individual with expertise in virology/immunology/infectious diseases. These positions may include 35-40% teaching; 50-55% research and/or clinical diagnostic service at the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UVDL); and 5% service.  Tenure-track or professional practice-track positions are available with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2027. Review of applications will begin October 16, 2026, and continue until both positions have been filled.  The tenure-track rank of assistant, associate, or full professor and the non-tenure track rank of professional practice assistant, associate, or full professor will be considered, depending on preference, qualifications, and experience of the successful applicants.

The candidates will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of veterinary professionals by delivering instruction in bacteriology/immunology and virology/immunology in the new Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree curriculum. In this capacity, the candidates are also expected to develop and implement innovative teaching methodologies, assessment tools, and evaluation criteria to measure veterinary students’ level of mastery as they progress through the academic program. The candidates will also contribute to other curriculum activities associated with their expertise.

Candidates with a research appointment will be expected to develop and carry out independent, nationally recognized research that includes mentoring graduate students engaged in research that is supported by external funding. Alternatively, candidates will be expected to contribute to clinical diagnostic services in their area of expertise at the UVDL.

Applicants must have a DVM and/or PhD degree related to microbiology/immunology, either in bacteriology or in virology, or both. The ideal candidates should have demonstrated experience teaching veterinary bacteriology/immunology or virology/immunology; and demonstrated research and/or clinical diagnostic experience.

These positions are eligible for excellent benefits, including paid holidays, 22 vacation days/year, a 50% undergraduate tuition reduction for employees and dependents, competitive health benefits packages, and a generous contribution to retirement. In addition, up to 4 days/month may be used for consulting work. View more information here: Summary of Benefits 2026-2027.

College/Department Highlights

Utah State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine (USU CVM) is building the next generation of veterinary medical education in Utah. The College welcomed its inaugural class of veterinary students in fall 2025 and is developing a four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program designed around excellent teaching, hands-on learning, collaboration, and engagement with veterinary and animal-health partners throughout the state and region. As Utah’s only veterinary medical education program, the CVM offers faculty the opportunity to help shape a growing college, refine a new curriculum, and influence how future veterinarians are prepared for practice.

The Department of Veterinary Clinical and Life Sciences (VCLS) brings together faculty whose expertise spans foundational and clinical sciences, veterinary education, research, diagnostic medicine, and service. Faculty joining VCLS in veterinary microbiology and immunology will play an important role in developing and delivering instruction in bacteriology, virology, immunology, and infectious diseases for veterinary and graduate students. These positions offer considerable opportunity for collaboration across disciplines and for faculty to build a professional portfolio that reflects their strengths in teaching, research, and/or veterinary diagnostic medicine.

The Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (UVDL), an integral part of the College of Veterinary Medicine, provides another distinctive opportunity for collaboration and impact. As Utah’s animal health laboratory and a member of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network, the UVDL supports veterinarians, animal agriculture, regulatory and public health partners, animal owners, and the university research community through contemporary veterinary diagnostic services, disease surveillance, and animal- and public-health preparedness. Faculty with diagnostic interests may contribute directly to this mission while participating in veterinary, graduate, and resident education.

Benefited faculty have access to a comprehensive total rewards package intended to support long-term professional sustainability and work–life balance, including university retirement contributions, medical and dental coverage, paid leave, tuition-reduction benefits, and opportunities for professional development.

Located in Logan, Utah, USU combines the amenities of a university community with immediate access to the mountains and the broader Wasatch Front. Northern Utah offers welcoming communities, strong schools, a growing food and arts scene, and exceptional year-round outdoor recreation, including hiking, biking, fishing, camping, and world-class skiing. Utah is also home to some of the nation’s most recognizable public lands, including five national parks and numerous state parks, making red-rock deserts, alpine landscapes, and canyon country accessible for weekend exploration.

Utah will again welcome the world when the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games return in 2034. For those who choose to make Utah home, the Games will provide another opportunity to experience the region’s strong culture of community participation, volunteerism, and civic engagement.

This is an opportunity to join a growing veterinary college at a formative point in its development—contributing expertise, building programs and collaborations, and helping establish the educational, research, and diagnostic foundations that will serve Utah and the veterinary profession for decades to come.
