  • Overview

    The Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services at Utah State University invites applications for two tenure track positions at the Assistant or Associate Professor level to join the internationally recognized Department of Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences (ITLS). All relevant areas of specialization are welcome.  Individuals who bring scholarly and applied expertise in the areas of language learning, game studies, e-sports, information studies, literacy, and design of assessments are especially encouraged to apply.  Successful candidates will, by the time of appointment, have (1) a doctorate in Learning Sciences, Instructional Technology, Information Sciences, Educational Psychology, or other related fields and (2) have demonstrated excellence or the potential for future excellence in research and teaching. Located on the main campus in Logan, Utah, this is a 1 FTE, 9-month academic year position. The role assignment for this position is 50% research, 40% teaching, and 10% service. Review of applicants will begin November 1, 2019, and continue until the position is filled. The anticipated start date is August 1, 2020.

     

    The successful candidate is expected to develop a cutting-edge research program, supervise undergraduate and graduate students, and teach graduate and undergraduate courses delivered face-to-face, broadcast, and online. Candidates will have expertise in relevant theories, technologies, or methods and be prepared to teach existing course offerings in the department.  The successful candidate will also propose innovative new courses that will serve the needs of our student population at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Successful candidates will be receptive to opportunities for collaboration within the department, college, or university.  Candidates at the Associate level will have an established record of productivity and effectiveness that merits tenure at Utah State University, a Carnegie Research University with high research activity.

    Responsibilities

    • Participate in research, publication, grant writing, and other scholarly activities.
    • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of learning sciences and/or instructional technologies, including research methods.
    • Serve on graduate student committees and advise graduate students.
    • Engage with undergraduate students such as a research mentor or teaching fellow.
    • Provide service to the department, college, university, profession, and community.

    ASSISTANT PROFESSOR:

    • Earned doctorate in Instructional Technology, Learning Sciences, Information Science, Educational Psychology, or a related field before starting appointment.
    • Potential to conduct and disseminate high-quality research.
    • Potential to teach and mentor at the collegiate level.
    • Potential to write successful funding proposals to support scholarly activities.

     

    ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR:

    • Earned doctorate in Instructional Technology, Learning Sciences, Information Science, Educational Psychology, or a related field before starting appointment.
    • Established record of conducting and disseminating high-quality research.
    • Established record of teaching and mentoring at the collegiate level.
    • Established record of external funding proposals to support scholarly activities.

     

    Preferred Qualifications:

     

    ASSISTANT PROFESSOR:

    • National reputation.
    • Experience designing and developing educational materials, tools, or programs.
    • Teaching experience at the collegiate level, particularly in online courses.
    • Established record of conducting and disseminating high-quality research.
    • Grant or contract proposal writing experience.
    • Experience in online and distance education.

     

    ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR:

    • National and International reputation.
    • Experience designing and developing educational materials, tools, or programs.
    • Evidence of consistently effective teaching at the collegiate level, particularly in online courses.
    • Established record of conducting and disseminating high-quality research.
    • Consistent record of external funding to support scholarly activities.

    Department Highlights:

    The Instructional Technology & Learning Sciences department is composed of eleven full-time faculty with specializations in several areas including gaming, STEM education, assessment, the Maker movement, mobile technologies, cognitive science, computer science education, digital libraries, learning analytics, and computational thinking. The department offers Ph.D. and Master’s degrees along with endorsements in School Library Media Administration. The department also offers an undergraduate degree in Human Experience Design and Interaction, with emphases in game studies, esports, and multimedia development, as well as an undergraduate Multimedia Minor. The department was recently ranked 3rd in the nation among all online graduate education programs and ranked 1st in our field by US News and World Reports. Faculty have received national awards for teaching, research, and service, and serve in a variety of leadership positions in professional and scholarly organizations.
