  • Overview

    The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and the Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) at Utah State University (USU) invite applications for a cluster hire of three positions at the Assistant Tenure Track or Associate Professor levels. We seek candidates whose convergent research will generate data-driven, collaborative, sustainable, and holistic solutions to water quantity, quality, and management problems in the face of growing population, aging infrastructure, changing climate, and changing societal values. These are academic-year (9 month) appointments with an anticipated start date of August 2020.


    We seek candidates who can significantly contribute to scholarship and teaching in the broad topical areas of water resources engineering, environmental engineering, and/or hydraulic engineering. Successful candidates must articulate a vision for and show how their research and teaching in one or more of the areas below will: 1) yield data-driven, collaborative, sustainable, and holistic solutions; 2) leverage existing strengths throughout USU in hydrology, hydraulics, hydro informatics, water resources management, irrigation, water quality, and environmental engineering; and 3) improve CEE and USU capabilities to solve interdisciplinary water problems now and in the future. Areas of work may include:


    • Development of a new generation of hydrologic models that integrate biological, chemical, and physical processes across natural, built, and agricultural landscapes.
    • Ground and surface water hydrologic research focused on quantity, quality, and conjunctive management. This may include storm water management, wastewater reuse, and fate of environmental toxins and emerging contaminants.
    • Development of data and information systems that advance data-intensive approaches to solving water problems, including data science and machine learning applications in water resources management, smart infrastructure, and sensing systems.
    • Quantifying and forecasting water usage in food, energy, transportation, and other systems that consider changes in population, land use, and societal values.
    • Water-environment sustainability, including current and future impacts to water infrastructure due to changing climate; infrastructure hydraulic monitoring, risk analyses, failure modes, rehabilitation, and design; urbanization; and data science of hydraulic infrastructure.
    • Societal risk and hazard mitigation of water systems, including natural and man-made risks, hazards, and disasters with a focus on sustainable water-environment development strategies and community livability.
    • Managing hydropower, irrigation, water rights, or water supply in the Intermountain West.


    To promote transdisciplinary and convergent research, we encourage team applications from groups of up to three candidates, which may include dual career partners. Each applicant must apply individually but articulate in their individual 3-page research statement how some or all of their research integrates with the other team members.

    A review of applications will begin in early November and will continue until all three positions are filled.


    Successful candidates will:

    • Secure extramural funding adequate to support their research program.
    • Recruit and mentor graduate students to advance the research program.
    • Teach undergraduate and graduate engineering courses in the theme area.
    • Develop, lead, and be a member of convergent research teams both within and outside the CEE Department and UWRL.
    • Participate in department, university, and professional service and outreach.
    • Become nationally recognized for their work.


    Minimum Qualifications:


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Prior teaching experience.
    • Record of success in obtaining external funding.
    • A professional engineering license or the ability to obtain one.


    To be considered at the Associate Professor level, the following additional qualifications must be met:

    • An established research agenda with a strong publication record that demonstrates excellence and leadership in interdisciplinary, convergent research.
    • A strong record of extramural funding.
    • A record of success in research, teaching, and mentoring junior faculty and graduate students.

    1. Cover letter summarizing motivation, qualifications, experience, and career goals.

A concise statement of up to three pages that conveys your vision of how your proposed research program will: 1) address specific topical areas in the context of water sustainability challenges, 2) complement existing CEE Department and UWRL research, and 3) integrate with other interdisciplinary research/faculty collaborators at USU. For candidates applying as part of a team, the research statement must also identify proposed team members, describe how candidates’ expertise is cross-cutting and complementary, and how they would work collaboratively and synergistically to address the identified topical areas.
    4. A two-page teaching statement that explains your approach to teaching and briefly describes existing or new CEE courses you would like to teach or develop.

    In addition to the above required documents, candidates must upload two of their most relevant peer-reviewed journal article publications.  Each of these should be uploaded as separate PDF files.

    CEE and UWRL faculty, in collaboration with colleagues across USU's campus, conduct cutting edge water research that contributes to addressing growing societal water challenges and advances basic understanding in the water sciences. We seek colleagues who can conduct innovative field experiments, carry out laboratory studies using the UWRL's Environmental Quality and Hydraulics Laboratory facilities, develop new modeling approaches, and/or leverage advances in instrumentation, remote sensing, cyberinfrastructure, computing, and visualization to address critical challenges in protecting and managing water resources.
