  • Overview

    The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at Utah State University invites applications from candidates for a tenure-track faculty position in Geotechnical Engineering. The successful candidate's expertise is expected to be complementary to the research and teaching activities of the geotechnical engineering faculty in the CEE Department. In addition, the successful candidate will have the ability to perform interdisciplinary research with other research groups including those within USU's CEE Department (Transportation, Structural, Hydraulic Structures, Environmental, Irrigation, and Water Resources). As we strive to hire the best candidate, we will consider candidates with any research interest. However, we have identified the following research and teaching topics as areas for potential collaboration in the CEE Department: deep foundations, soil-structure interaction, surface erosion and local scour. It is expected that this position will be filled at the Assistant Professor level; however outstanding candidates will also be considered at the Associate Professor rank. Review of applications will begin on December 1, 2019. This is an academic-year (9 month) appointment with an anticipated start date of August 1st, 2020.

    Responsibilities

    Primary responsibilities will include conducting geotechnical engineering research and teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering.  Candidates are expected to build an active externally funded research program, provide effective teaching and mentoring at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and provide service within the University and their respective national and international professional communities.

    Qualifications

    Required Qualifications
    • Earned doctorate in Civil Engineering with emphasis in Geotechnical Engineering or a closely related field,
    • Demonstrated ability to conduct geotechnical engineering research and disseminate findings in appropriate outlets (high-quality, peer-reviewed journals and technical conferences),
    • Effective interpersonal, communication, and teaching skills,
    • Ability to write grant proposals to support scholarly activities,
    • Ability to attract high quality graduate research students.

     

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Ability to teach fundamental undergraduate soil mechanics and geotechnical design courses,
    • Ability to teach fundamental engineering and/or engineering mechanics courses,
    • Ability to teach advanced graduate courses in geotechnical engineering,
    • Ability and desire to collaborate with a diverse multidisciplinary team of colleagues,
    • Professional engineering licensure or the ability to obtain such.

     

    To be considered at the Associate Professor level, the following additional qualifications must be met:
    • An established research program with a publication record,
    • A strong record of extramural funding,
    • A well-recognized record of excellence in research, teaching, and supervising graduate students.
