Overview

The Climate Science Program and the Department of Plants, Soils and Climate invites applications for a tenure-track, academic year (9-month) faculty appointment in atmospheric science and meteorology at the rank of Assistant Professor. The position will be defined as approximately 65% research, 30% teaching and 5% service. We are searching for an applied scientist who is capable of interfacing between studies of drought prediction and large-scale meteorological phenomena.  A modeling background from the perspective of data assimilation would be an advantage.  Applicants with on-going activities in climate research of the western U.S. are particularly encouraged.  The candidate must have experience in teaching upper division meteorological courses such as dynamic meteorology and synoptic meteorology. The position is co-funded by and will be affiliated with USU’s interdisciplinary Ecology Center and will be affiliated with the Utah Climate Center.  Review of the candidates will begin December 15, 2019.  The estimated start date for this position is August 1, 2020. 

Responsibilities

  • Create and lead an externally funded research program of applied climate science that interfaces between studies of drought prediction and large-scale meteorological phenomena.
  • Teach upper division meteorological courses such as dynamic meteorology, atmospheric thermodynamics, physics of climate, and synoptic meteorology.
  • Mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology or closely related field
  • The candidate must have experience in teaching upper division meteorological courses such as dynamic meteorology, atmospheric thermodynamics, physics of climate, and synoptic meteorology.
  • Evidence of excellent communication skills and interactions with other inter-discipline curricula, such as those programs at Utah State University within the Ecology Center and the Climate Adaptation Science

Preferred Qualifications

  • A modeling background from the perspective of data assimilation would be an advantage.
  • Applicants with an interest in or on-going activities in climate research in the western U.S. are particularly encouraged.
  • Post-doctoral experience
  • Track record of both collaborative and independent research

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Demonstrated background in studying regional drought dynamics, prediction, and weather linkages.
  • Proficiency in computer programming, modeling, and statistics as the research tool.
  • Knowledge in remote sensing technique and data resources.
  • The candidate must have experience in teaching upper division meteorological courses.
