Overview

The Department of Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences invites applications for a Researcher II to join a multi-institutional research team, conducting research in science and computer science education at the middle school level.

 

This position is funded primarily by a multi-year foundation grant. It is guaranteed for 4 years, pending satisfactory job performance.

 

The ideal candidate will take part in a variety of collaborative activities related to the implementation of this project, including working closely with the participating teachers and actively contributing to the analysis and dissemination of the research findings.

Responsibilities

  • Collaboratively participate in ongoing academic research, publication, grant writing, and other scholarly activities associated under the supervision of the assigned supervisor
  • Lead and assist in research design, data collection, and analysis
  • Help lead the design of innovative middle school classroom experiences using a programmable sensor platform
  • Plan and facilitate professional learning workshops for teachers that focus on NGSS-aligned, CT-integrated science instruction
  • Observe and support teachers in their classrooms as they implement CT-integrated science curriculum and troubleshooting technology issues
  • Some travel may be required
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate or ABD in Education, Psychology, Learning Sciences, Computer Science, or a related field by the date of appointment
  • Prior experience in classroom-based, design-based, qualitative, or quantitative research methodologies
  • Experience supporting teachers and their students to use technology in K12 classrooms
  • Ability to visit teachers at various school sites on a regular basis
  • Ability to work without direct supervision and as a team member
  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills
  • Knowledge of sensor technology and computational thinking, with some basic knowledge of programming

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience providing professional support to K12 teachers (in groups and one on one)
  • Research and/or teaching experience related to K12 classrooms
  • Knowledge of Next Generation Science Standards, or related standards
  • Experience in publishing in peer reviewed journals and conferences

The Instructional Technology & Learning Sciences department is composed of eleven full-time faculty with specializations in several areas including gaming, STEM education, assessment, the Maker movement, mobile technologies, cognitive science, computer science education, digital libraries, learning analytics, and computational thinking. The department offers Ph.D. and Master’s degrees along with endorsements in School Library Media Administration. The department also offers an undergraduate degree in Human Experience Design and Interaction, with emphases in game studies, esports, and multimedia development, as well as an undergraduate Multimedia Minor.
