Overview

The Department of Aviation and Technical Education in the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences at Utah State University (USU) offers a non-tenure track, .92 FTE (11-month) Professional Practice Instructor of Fabrication Technology (term-appointment). As part of USU's land grant mission to make academic programs accessible throughout the state, this position will be physically located at the USU Moab Statewide Campus in Moab, Utah. The program prepares individuals for careers in design, fabrication, and advanced manufacturing process that utilize metal, composites, and plastics. With skills in welding, machining, bending, and materials testing, program completers will be ready for entry level positions in outdoor power recreation equipment, energy resource collection and distribution, manufacturing, construction, and robotic control processes.  The estimated start date for this position is August 1, 2020. 

Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to: 

  • Develop and implement a fabrication technology program designed to address local workforce needs and industry standards. 
  • Design and deliver classroom and shop instruction focused on workforce training, and industry-approved certifications. 
  • Teach courses in common and advanced fabrication processes, following AWS/ASME standards for certificates. 
  • Teach in the primary welding processes (MIG, TIG, Stick and OAW) with major metals like mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum.  
  • Implement a competency-base, open-entry and open-exit curriculum suitable for students enrolled at USU Moab. 
  • Responsible for management and upkeep of the fabrication equipment and shop. 
  • Responsible for the coordination of biannual program advisory committees (PAC) meetings. 
  • Teach adults, high school, and community education courses related to fabrication technology. 
  • Teach non-credit courses that provide certifications for industry.  
  • Serve on departmental, college, and university committees. 
  • Recruit and mentor fabrication students. 
  • Participate and promote Skills USA, serving as the USU Moab advisor. 
  • Actively participate in professional growth and development activities.  
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications 

  • A.S. or A.A.S. degree in fabrication, manufacturing, welding or a very closely related field from an accredited school or three or more years of industry or related experience where work is performed to a recognized industry code and is primarily focused on metal fabrication processes.  
  • CWI/CWE certification or the ability to obtain the certification within one year. 
  • Journeyman level welding skills in one or more arc welding processes. 
  • Ability to teach machine tool technology – manual and CNC mills and lathes.  
  • Capable to instruct students on current pipe welding techniques.  
  • Familiarity with the use of composite and plastics in the manufacturing process.  
  • Teaching-focused candidate who understands and is committed to the CTE mission of USU Moab. 
  • A desire to succeed and a willingness to work to become a better instructor and technician. 
  • Cultural sensitivity and an ability to build rapport with a culturally diverse workforce in a multicultural setting. 
  • Dynamic interpersonal skills and a commitment as a team member; ability to foster consensus and collaboration. 
  • An ability to set specific departmental goals and develop related curriculum. 
  • An ability to accommodate student learning styles through shop, lecture, self-directed learning, and capstone projects.   

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Experience with the Procedure Qualification Record (PQR0 and the Welding Procedure Qualification Record (WPQR).
  • Pipe welding experience in an energy related industry. 
  • Manufacturing experience.
  • Work with robotic manufacturing systems.  
  • Experience with competency-based teaching and learning. 
  • Familiarity with and commitment to open-entry and open-exit curriculum design and implementation.
