Overview

The Equipment Operator III performs complex work maintenance, repair, and installation of all underground culinary, sewer, stormwater, and main irrigation water systems including the operation of heavy equipment. The Equipment Operator III accomplishes this by applying journeyman skills in conjunction with advanced technical knowledge and the ability to analyze and understand unique project requests. Must be willing to be on call year round, including some weekends and holidays. Must also be willing to work Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities

  1. Installs and repairs 4" and larger irrigation lines.
  2. Performs the digging for all underground electrical, water (culinary, sewer, stormwater, irrigation), and steam lines, using heavy equipment.
  3. Installs and repairs underground water (culinary, sewer, and stormwater) systems.
  4. Operates heavy equipment for general site preparation, landscaping, and other related assignments, as needed.
  5. Performs snow removal for University streets and parking lots.
  6. Performs preventative maintenance on culinary valves and storm drains.
  7. Provides technical guidance and direction for less senior technicians.
  8. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  9. Cleans equipment, shop area and work site.
  10. Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
  11. Responds to on-call emergency situations, including snow removal.
  12. Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  1. Minimum of 4 years directly related work experience in utility maintenance/equipment operation trade. 
  2. Have or be able to obtain a Class A CDL (Commercial Drivers License) to perform essential job responsibilities. 
  3. Must be able to be on call some weekends and holidays.

This position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions, such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting.  Employees work outside and will not be protected from weather conditions, including extreme cold and extreme heat for extended periods. 

 

Employees are exposed to hazardous conditions including, noise, vibrations from machinery, moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to chemicals, elevated work spaces, such as scaffolding, and atmospheric conditions that can affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation.
