Incumbents in the News Coordinator (Public Media Specialist I) position will be responsible for crafting written communications used to support public relations initiatives for the university; coordinating online media monitoring; and gathering, identifying, and promoting university programs.


Typical Functions:

  • Supports the university's goals and objectives by developing, implementing, and delivering written news stories about university happenings; faculty, staff, and student profiles, and university programs.
  • Participates in the development and support of a regional and national media strategy.
  • Writes print and electronic communications, including news releases, social media, brochures, web articles, or newsletters.
  • Independently interviews a variety of sources, including students, faculty, staff, and community members, asking appropriate questions to create compelling content.
  • Uses analytical media monitoring software to organize news about the university and disseminate digital reports to university Marketing and Communication staff, university executive leadership, and other key stakeholders.
  • Coordinates the use of online student achievement announcements to further the university's reputation and reach.
  • Establishes relationships with key university stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and students.
  • Ensures written products match Utah State University's branding position.
  • Understands story strategy in relation to the university's mission and vision.
  • Works closely with university Marketing and Communication staff to create packaged content.
  • May serve as a substitute editor for Utah State Today.
  • May assist in the development and implementation of special events and promotional activities.
  • May prepare and disseminate information, including annual reports, executive summaries, and other reports in order to manage the reputation of the department.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to assist in planning, organizing, and coordinating media activities and promotional events.

  • Ability to professionally interact with a diverse group of clients and colleagues.
  • Knowledge of journalism, marketing, and branding principles and techniques.
  • Knowledge of and proven experience using social media tools and platforms and their use in media communications.
  • Ability to summarize and interpret facts and trends as they pertain to complicated materials.
  • Ability to move a project from concept to execution.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines and within established budgets.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.



Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in marketing, public relations, advertising, broadcast journalism, communication, or related field plus two years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.


Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to professionally write, speak, and edit both Spanish and English documents, as well as translate content to and from Spanish and English.
