Performs complex work in the efficient installation, maintenance, and repair of campus emergency diesel generator systems. Accomplishes this by applying journeyman skills in conjunction with advanced technical knowledge and the ability to analyze and understand unique project requests. Works as a member of a team on various projects or assignments.


  1. Repairs and maintains diesel engine generators and automatic transfer switches.
  2. Performs preventative maintenance on diesel engine generators and automatic transfer switches.
  3. Provides technical guidance and direction to less senior technicians.
  4. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  5. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  6. Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  7. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.


Minimum of 4 years direct work experience in the diesel mechanics trade OR Associates degree or formal trade school certificate of training and/or schooling in the diesel trade



5 years of direct work experience in diesel engine, automatic transfer switch maintenance and repair and applying journeyman level skills




  • Comprehensive knowledge of all state electrical, safety, EPA, and fire codes.
  • Knowledge and skill in diesel engine mechanics.
  • Skill in the use of various hand and power tools common to the trade.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Ability to create, read, understand, and build to specifications from blue prints and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to work without supervision. 
  • Ability to service and maintain diesel engine generators. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and customers.

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects.  Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees occasionally work outdoors, may not be protected from weather conditions or contaminants, and may be exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations.
