Utah State University Health Professions in the Career and Technical Education program at USU Eastern, is seeking a Professional Practice Instructor for the Surgical Technology Program. This is an academic-year (9-month) + 2 summer months, non-tenure track appointment and will be defined as approximately 95% Teaching and 5% Service. 

The proposed start date for this position will be January 1, 2021.


  • Full-time, academic year professional teaching position located on the Price campus and collaborating with Health Professions faculty and students also at the USU Moab and USU Blanding campuses.
  • The primary responsibility will be to teach surgical technology courses.
  • Educator delivers class and/or clinical instructions according to an approved curriculum using accepted and effective teaching methods.
  • Educator will be expected to develop daily lesson plans, provide academic advising, participate in department training, attend meetings, and engage in campus and community service.
  • Teach both theoretical and practical learning experiences.
  • Direct, guide and evaluate student performance in a laboratory setting.
  • The typical teaching load is four courses each semester (fall and spring).


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Hold a credential in the surgical technology field from a nationally recognized and accredited credentialing agency (Supervisors of a surgical technology program hired after July 1, 2020, hold the Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential);
  • Possess a minimum of three (3) years of operating room experience in the scrub role within the last five (5) years or three (3) years teaching in the field of surgical technology prior to employment;
  • Must meet all regulatory and accreditation requirements;
  • Computer proficiency including knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook; and
  • Current CPR card
  • Job requires some travel to Moab and Blanding, access to reliable transportation is required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a health sciences or related health sciences field of study from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrated training in educational methods, testing and evaluation with evidence strength in instructional methodology, delivery, and pedagogical techniques.
  • Prior teaching experience -- especially in a technology-augmented classroom.
