RE-ADVERTISED: This position is housed at the Utah State University Salt Lake Center and reports to the Associate Vice President of the Wasatch Region, and works closely with the Director of Statewide Campuses Facilities. This position will manage the facilities-related contractors and projects, manage the controls for the HVAC system, greenhouse, and exterior door access. As well as clean and maintain the interior building areas, greenhouse, and grounds on the University campus to maximize a safe, clean, clear, consistent, and functional environment. Also, this position will ensure the building is open and ready every morning as well as ready for the evening rush of students.


WORK HOURS: Monday – Friday, 7:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.


Cleaning & Maintenance Percentage of Time 60%

  • Continuously maintains the campus grounds and interior common areas, restrooms, classrooms, and employee areas so they are clean, clear of clutter, and consistent.
  • Ensures broken or damaged items are quickly identified and repaired.
  • Educates and directs contracted janitorial service and staff on COVID-19 cleaning procedures.
  • Maintains adequate stock of cleaning supplies.
  • Manages, responds to, and trains others on tracking system for cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  • Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Proactively manages the sophisticated environmental controls with HVAC operations system, including troubleshooting, and training through physical checks of building spaces, equipment, and system monitoring.
  • Assist faculty with managing the greenhouse including managing the complex controls, troubleshooting problems, and perform maintenance.
  • Cleans and maintains the exterior of our building, outside area, landscaping, sprinklers, windows, parking lot.
  • Run the carpet cleaning equipment and coordinate with other Statewide Campuses to clean their carpets.
  • Ensure USU vehicles are properly maintained, clean, and safe.
  • Oversee pesticide and weed management.
  • Coordinate with and assist Event Coordinator with event setup and breakdown including moving furniture, emptying trash, as well as cleaning.
  • Attends meetings with other Statewide Campus facilities team members to promote continued education and support.

Direct Vendors & Contractors Percentage of Time 25%

  • Coordinates with USU Facilities Director and USU Business Services to ensure all contracts are carried out within USU policies and procedures.
  • Directs and manages onsite contractors and vendors as they complete reactive and proactive maintenance.
  • Ensures quality work is done to expectations.
  • Schedules, coordinates with a contracted security firm to address any alarm incidents and to ensure that fire and security alarms are working properly.
  • Assist with security systems, door access control, and protocols.

Project management Percentage of Time 10%

  • Identify projects to maintain and improve the building and operations.
  • Oversees, participates, and contributes to facilities-related projects.
  • Assist in all safety-related projects and committees.

Other Duties as assigned Percentage of Time 5%

  • Performs all duties and tasks assigned by a supervisor.


Minimum Qualifications

  • RE-ADVERTISED:Minimum of 2 years related commercial cleaning or facilities-related work experience.
  • Strong desire to learn and be effective.
  • Proactively and effectively communicates.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Exceptional ability to identify maintenance problems and take initiative to resolve.
  • Strong team player who works effectively with others to accomplish tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Electrical & plumbing experience.
  • Knowledge of greenhouse controls.
  • Successful experience directing contractors.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Knowledge of safe grounds maintenance methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of chemical cleaning supplies and application.
  • Knowledge of proper cleaning techniques and standards.
  • Knowledge of basic hand tools and equipment used in routine building maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of basic building and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of snow removal equipment and procedures.
  • Knowledge of leaf blowers, leaf vacuums, other general landscaping equipment.
  • Knowledge of sprinkler maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of pesticides and applications to maintain weed, insect control around center.
  • Skilled in the operation of cleaning equipment such as vacuums, carpet extractors, carpet cleaners, etc.
  • Skilled in the use of computers and technology.
  • Ability to use and care for hand and power tools used in custodial work.
  • Ability to learn and care for an assigned area and equipment.
  • Ability to identify maintenance problems that need the attention of repair personnel.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions without close supervision.
  • Ability to work well under pressure; meeting multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines.
  • Ability to complete routine paperwork.
  • Ability to manage and coordinate with outside contracts and contractors.
  • Ability to learn and participate in trainings to improve performance and safety.

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting (50 pounds) and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects.   Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting.  Work environment also includes all types of weather out in the sun, rain, snow, heat, cold, etc. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
