Overview

The Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling is seeking two outstanding candidates to fill tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor positions with expertise in (a) reading and language arts instruction for students with disabilities, or (b) early childhood special education. The department is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.

 

Located on the main campus in Logan, Utah, this is a 1 FTE, 9-month academic year position.

Responsibilities

Serve as a member of the Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation faculty including:

  1. Developing an active line of research,
  2. Teaching face-to-face and web-based synchronous and asynchronous undergraduate and/or graduate classes,
  3. Supervising undergraduate and graduate field experiences,
  4. Advising and mentoring graduate students,
  5. Collaborating in department and university program development and committees,
  6. Seeking extramural funding to support graduate students and research.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

All Ranks

  1. Doctorate (ABD may be considered) in special education or related field,
  2. Direct service experience with individuals with disabilities,
  3. A history of positive working relationships with teachers, clinicians, administrators, and faculty,
  4. Expertise in either:
    1. evidence-based reading and language arts instruction for students with disabilities, or
    2. early childhood special education.

Additional Minimum Qualifications for Assistant Professor Rank

  1. Evidence of potential to be an excellent, productive scholar and researcher,
  2. Evidence of potential to be a effective college-level teacher
  3. Evidence of potential to obtain extramural funding for research and/or training activities

Additional Minimum Qualifications for Associate Professor Rank

  1. Established record of excellence and productivity in scholarship and research
  2. Established record of effective college-level teaching
  3. Established record of obtaining extramural funding for research and/or training activities

Preferred Qualifications:

Qualified candidates who have one (or more) of the following qualifications will be given preference:

  • Expertise in effective instruction and curricular adaptation to support the inclusion of children with disabilities,
  • Expertise in explicit and systematic instruction,
  • Research focus on children who represent culturally and linguistically diverse populations,
  • Relevant birth-12th grade teaching experience,
  • Expertise in single case research design,
  • Expertise in quantitative analysis including multi-level modeling and other advanced statistical techniques,
  • Expertise in multi-tiered systems of academic and behavior support (response to intervention and school-wide positive behavior interventions and supports),
  • Expertise in applications of behavior analysis in education,
  • Demonstrated ability to obtain extramural funding for research and/or training activities.
  • Expertise in assessment, evaluation, and/or policy in education,

The Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling offers special education degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. The bachelor’s program prepares graduates to teach students with mild/moderate disabilities, severe disabilities, and/or young children with disabilities ages 0-5. The department offers three master’s degrees: Master of Science (M.S.) and Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Special Education, and Master of Rehabilitation Counseling (M.R.C.). The Special Education master’s programs may be combined with a BCBA course sequence. The SPED master’s program is ranked as 5th “Best Value Masters Programs in Special Education 2015-2016” and the Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling is ranked #15 in the country by US News and World Report.  The department sponsors a doctoral (Ph.D.) program in Disability Disciplines which includes specializations in (1) special education, (2) applied behavior analysis, (3) rehabilitation counseling, (4) speech and language pathology, (5) audiology, (6) pathokinesiology, and (7) disability studies. Doctoral scholars are highly valued as contributors of research, mentoring, and service. On-campus service and research opportunities associated with the department and the doctoral program include Aggies Elevated, a post-secondary education program for young adults with intellectual disabilities; ASSERT, an internationally recognized preschool program for children with autism; and Behavior Support Services, an out-patient clinic specializing in the treatment of challenging behavior and acquisition of appropriate behavior and skills. Our faculty also direct a variety of research, personnel preparation, and service projects in partnership with Utah schools, with the scope of work spanning from individual technical assistance to systems-level capacity building. The use of technology enables statewide outreach efforts, with a focus on supporting rural schools. Faculty in the Department have a strong history of collaboration with other departments including Psychology, Teacher Education and Leadership (which features a Literacy Clinic), Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education, and others.

 

The Department of Special Education and Rehabilitation Counseling is recognized nationally for its personnel preparation and research. Department faculty, along with colleagues from the Center for Persons with Disabilities (one of 50 University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities), have a well-established record of obtaining research and training grants, providing national and international consulting, editing national journals, and participating in professional organizations.
