The ASPIRE NSF Engineering Research Center (ERC) at Utah State University (USU) has an immediate opening for a Research Engineer with mechanical engineering experience. The position will provide engineering support to a wide range of research and development projects with government and industry sponsors and academic partners. Topic areas include high power electric vehicle charging systems, electric and hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle, bus and truck development, wireless charging systems for electric vehicles, battery management systems, grid-tied power converters, grid integration of renewable energy and energy storage, micro-grid management, cybersecurity for EV charging and micro-grid systems, and embedded and cloud software development and deployment associated with the above systems.


The primary responsibility is to provide mechanical engineering support to projects in the areas listed above. Additional responsibilities include: lead engineering efforts with teams of graduate and undergraduate students, advise and train lab personnel, develop testing procedures, provide professional level documentation on projects, and provide customer support to sponsors on projects and hardware deliverables.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • To qualify for the Research Engineer I level: Bachelor's degree plus 3 years of related work experience
  • To qualify for the Research Engineer II level: Bachelor's degree plus 5 years of related work experience or a Master's degree and 3 years of related work experience
  • To qualify for the Research Engineer III level: Master's degree plus 5 years of related work experience
  • Experience managing projects with many tasks, milestones and deliverables
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Strong oral and written English communications skills and an ability to work within a team environment and oversee engineering design and testing
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple job tasks under strict deadlines

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing battery pack and power electronic assemblies for: thermal management, ventilation, creepage/clearance, structural integrity, and enclosure requirements
  • Knowledge with modeling software tools including: ANSYS (Fluent and IcePak tools), Solid Edge/Solid Works or similar 3D modeling software
  • Project management experience – including the development of drawing fabrication packages, sourcing and managing vendors to execute, and supporting lab management to meet project schedules
  • Understanding of engineering design practices and ability to work with and/or preform component machining/fabrication

Resources at USU include the state-of-the-art Electric Vehicle and Roadway (EVR) Research Facility and Test Track, the USU Power Electronics Laboratory (UPEL), and the Utah Transportation Center (UTC).
