The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (http://www.mae.usu.edu/) at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant and Associate Professor levels. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or closely related fields. Candidates will be considered at either the assistant or associate professor level. The positions are tenure-track academic year (funded for 9-months) appointments with an anticipated start date of January 2022. Candidates in all areas of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering will be considered. Preference may be given to those with demonstrated expertise in experimental fluid mechanics (including state-ot-the-art optical measurement techniques), or hypersonic flow (including shock influenced chemical reaction in propulsion and boundary layers, hypersonic ionization, and non-equilibrium high-enthalpy flow). In addition to a clear research focus, successful applicants will also have a strong background in engineering fundamentals and will be expected at a minimum to: 1) develop a significant externally funded research program that includes a strong record of peer-reviewed publications and graduate mentorship, 2) effectively teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and 3) actively participate in assigned department and university duties, and demonstrate leadership in relevant technical societies.

The MAE department has experienced significant growth over the past decade, with current enrollments of approximately 800 undergraduate and 100 graduate students and offers M.S. and PhD degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering. The department currently has 17 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and 4 professors of practice, with additional part-time instructors from local industry and research institutions. Faculty research areas include fluid dynamics, flight mechanics, space dynamics, advanced materials, controls, and systems engineering with research expenditures in 2020 about $3M. Successful applicants may have opportunities to work closely with scientists and engineers from the USU Research Foundation Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL), one of 14 Department of Defense University Affiliated Research Centers (UARC) with annual revenues in excess of $200 million. Further, USU faculty also have access to the University of Utah Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC) facilities and the Utah Water Lab. USU is the nearest PhD-granting institution in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering to the Idaho National Laboratory, and is also in close proximity to Hill Air Force Base and other defense related organizations.
Utah State University (USU) was founded in 1888 and is honored to be Utah’s land-grant and space-grant university. USU is a Carnegie RU/H (Research University/High Research Activity) institution with approximately 27,700 students (24,660 undergraduates and 3,040 graduate students) on the Logan main campus. Utah State’s statewide system features eight campuses and 23 education centers and serves all counties in the state with Extension programs. USU offers 114 undergraduate majors, 132 graduate programs, and a variety of innovative stackable associate and certificate credentials. Washington Monthly ranked USU 14th in their national university rankings in 2019 and the 5th best public national university in the nation in 2018. As one of the two premier research institutions in Utah, USU is proud to provide a high-quality education at an affordable price. Additional information about Utah State University can be found here.
A core characteristic of USU is engagement with communities and people in economic development, improvements to quality of life, and human capital. Through the practical application of knowledge, the University and its faculty engage and share expertise with the state, nation, and world, preserving the historical land-grant tradition of partnering with communities to address critical societal issues in the interest of the public good.
The USU main campus is located in beautiful Logan, Utah; a city of about 50,000 situated in a picturesque mountain valley about 80 miles north of Salt Lake City. Outstanding recreational opportunities abound in the nearby mountains and proximate region.
