Overview

Two Undergraduate Technicians are needed to evaluate a water resources exhibit named Decisions Downstream at the Natural History Museum of Utah. The Technicians will conduct surveys with museum visitors to evaluate their experience and understanding of water resources decision-making. Students will be trained to administer surveys to museum visitors.

 

Successful applicants should have an interest in or willingness to learn about art-science exhibits, general public education, public surveys for external evaluation, and/or water resources decision-making.

 

Additional desired skills include: valid Utah driver’s license to perform essential job responsibilities, such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials, the ability to work independently, and a friendly demeanor with the public. Technicians may also help with data analysis, project synthesis, and paper writing, if desired.

Responsibilities

Student technicians will drive to the Natural History Museum of Utah, administer visitor surveys for ~ 5-6 hours and return to Logan (students may stay in Salt Lake City if that makes sense for them). COVID restrictions are in place at the Natural History Museum of Utah and include reduced visitor capacity, social distancing, and face coverings. Technicians are expected to adhere to all COVID safety protocol to maintain the safety of themselves and museum visitors.

Qualifications

  • Valid Utah driver’s license to perform essential job responsibilities, such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials
  • Requires weekend work, including some Sundays
  • Willingness to learn public survey and museum exhibit evaluation techniques

The environment and physical requirements may change depending on the specific function of the work each department performs. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents may nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).

 

Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally, indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for periods of time. The incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises or vibrations from equipment, and conditions that may affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
