The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. The position will be located on the main Logan campus and will start in August 2022. Applicants should have a PhD in chemistry (or related field) and a background in experimental research in physical chemistry or chemical physics or a closely related field.

The research area is flexible although preference will be given to qualified candidates proposing research programs having a significant physical chemistry or chemical physics component in the following areas: photochemistry (broadly defined); materials/device development/synthesis, especially with application to sustainable-energy research (e.g., solar energy development, energy storage, etc.). Applicants whose proposed research area overlaps with -- but does not duplicate -- existing research areas in the Department are particularly encouraged to apply.

This is a full-time, nine-month (academic year) appointment with a 50:40:10 division of effort between research, teaching, and service. To advance in the ranks the successful candidate will be expected; (i) to develop an innovative, externally funded research program which achieves a strong national reputation for excellence in the field; (ii) to participate effectively in undergraduate and graduate teaching. Teaching responsibilities will primarily be in physical chemistry at all levels; (iii) to engage effectively in service, for example, graduate student supervisory committee and Departmental/College/University committee service.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in chemistry or a closely related field with a background in experimental Physical Chemistry/Chemical Physics or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated excellence in research (including through peer reviewed publications).
  • Clear potential for significant and sustained future innovative contributions in research and teaching.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Post-doctoral (Academic, National Laboratory, or Industrial) research experience in experimental Physical Chemistry or Chemical Physics, or a closely related field.
  • A strong track record of significant scholarly publications.

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry (http://www.chem.usu.edu/) is ACS accredited and offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Chemistry and in Biochemistry. The Department is committed to excellence in research and teaching. It is housed in two connected buildings. Together, the buildings total 124,000 square feet. The Department is equipped with modern instrumentation, including NMR and EPR instruments staffed by a PhD scientist, as well as additional shared analytical instrumentation and shared computational cluster resources.
