Overview

The Department of Plants, Soils and Climate and its Climate Science Program invite applications for a full-time, academic year, term appointment position at the level of Lecturer to begin in January 2022. We seek candidates with expertise in areas such as meteorology, weather/climate prediction, extreme events, climate change physics, etc. that complement existing strengths in the climate program. Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include (1) the development of a high-quality teaching portfolio employing hands-on, data-driven learning techniques in Atmospheric and Climate Science, (2) teaching three courses per semester to contribute to the department’s bachelor’s degree program in Climate Science, and (3) performance of student mentoring duties commensurate with a full-time teaching appointment in the department. Evidence of excellent verbal, written, and social media skills is required.

 

The successful candidate will teach a variety of classes at the freshmen to senior levels and co-advise students in preparation for professional conferences. The successful candidate’s course responsibilities comprise – Climate and Climate Change (PSC 4820/6820, 3 credits), The Atmosphere and Weather (PSC 2000, 3 credits), Synoptic Meteorology (PSC 4870, 3 credits), and a Climate Science Practicum (PSC 4xxx, 2-4 credits); these 4 core courses will be supplemented with 2 other courses elective or otherwise. Role statement consists of 90% teaching and 10% service. The initial term is for three years with the possibility of renewal.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of M.S. degree in Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, Climate Dynamics, Physical Oceanography, or related fields.
  • Evidence of high-quality teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level.
  • A commitment to quality teaching that incorporates hands-on learning and to mentoring of a diverse student body.

Preferred  Qualifications:

  • Evidence of effective communication skills as described previously.
  • Experience in community engaging projects that involve undergraduate or graduate students.

The Climate Science Degree (CSD) program integrates basic and applied principles of meteorology, climatology with environmental physics, which are concerned with how natural laws determine the climate. These include understanding and measurements of the atmosphere, soil, water and plants, and how the data are used to address practical issues related to climate change. The purpose of the CSD is to train the next generation of global leaders in climate and climate change sciences. The undergraduate degree program emphasizes the scientific study of the behavior of weather and climate, and applications to the important practical problems of climate prediction.

 

The Department of Plants, Soils and Climate courses emphasize understanding the physical, chemical and biological mechanisms that operate in the continuum of the soil, plants and atmosphere and how they affect the management of a wide range of agricultural and natural systems. Undergraduate courses focus on acquiring and applying knowledge and developing the skills students will need in their chosen field of study. The program also prepares students to develop lifelong learning skills, understand and appreciate diversity, be productive citizens of the world and be professionals in their vocations. A major effort is directed at extending research and teaching programs to all citizens of the state of Utah.
