This position is responsible for developing innovative software tools that work with the LMS through LTI to support teaching and learning. You will have the opportunity to work with other software developers, systems admins, instructional designers, faculty and others. You will be part of the Teaching and Learning Technologies team which has been charged with keeping USU on the cutting edge of teaching and learning.

Review of applications will begin on Nov 20th, 2021 and the position will remain open until filled. This position reports to the Director of Teaching and Learning Technologies, and will be mentored by a software developer on the team.


This position's primary responsibility is to design, develop, test, and maintain innovative software tools that work with the LMS through LTI that support teaching and learning. Additional opportunities to be part of the software R&D effort for our classroom innovation lab.

  • Develop systems using PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other software development languages.
  • Collaborate with others in AIS including programmers, systems administrators, instructional designers, faculty, and student staff
  • Implement best security practices to ensure code and systems are secure.
  • Learn new programming languages, databases, query systems as needed to complete projects.
  • Work closely with other IT professionals in accomplishing project objectives.
  • Assist with various development projects and take the lead on some of them as assigned.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work environments and assignments.
  • Implement best practices and standards for ADA compliant web applications
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus two years of experience in an IT-related field or an equivalent combination of experience plus education is required. Will consider someone graduating in Dec 2021 if they have internship or other work experience that meets criteria.
  • Basic understanding of all of the following concepts and technologies:
      o HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, or similar web languages.
      o Database models, design and SQL
      o REST and SOAP APIs.
      o Linux, Windows, and/or OSX.
  • Excellent communication skills, including listening, writing, and speaking.
  • Ability to listen to customer needs and formulate an overall analysis and effective project plan.
  • Self-driven team player with the ability to work independently.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of computer security, data privacy laws and practices.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Utilized git (or similar) for version control as well as supporting platforms
  • Ability to learn new programming languages and frameworks quickly.
  • Knowledge of network topologies.
  • Knowledge and use of cloud services (AWS, Azure, etc.).
  • Develop, program, and deploy programs to on premise and cloud-based servers, along with testing and interfacing with 3rd party solution providers.
  • Provide programming and maintenance for existing websites, including database development and design.
  • Ability and willingness to write documentation and self-documenting code.
