Overview

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Applied Probability in Mathematical Biology with a starting date of August 1, 2022. This position is intended for a probabilist with interests in biological, ecological, or environmental applications, particularly those that complement and enhance the current strengths of our Mathematical Biology group (https://math.usu.edu/research/). This position is part of a faculty cluster hire in USU’s College of Science, and we seek applicants with potential to contribute to excellence in USU’s research and education missions while also advancing USU’s justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) missions and goals. The Mathematical Biology group specializes in data-driven, computational, multi-disciplinary research using mathematical tools to investigate current questions in living systems.  The group maintains active collaborations in biology, ecology, engineering, and natural resources, and students have numerous opportunities to apply mathematics in the context of important biological, environmental, and ecological challenges. We are interested in candidates focusing on data-driven mathematical modeling, uncertainty quantification, or with expertise in stochastic modeling, analysis, and simulation of problems in connection to biological applications.

Responsibilities

Duties include establishing a strong, independent research program in mathematical biology, actively participating in the Mathematical Biology group, collaborating more generally with quantitative bioscientists, mentoring research students and participating in the College’s JEDI Collaboratory.  Teaching duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in pure and applied mathematics, including probability theory and stochastic processes. Depending on the candidate’s background, teaching duties may also include numerical methods, nonlinear dynamics, partial differential equations, asymptotic analysis, and applied math methods.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • P.h.D. in Mathematical Biology, Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, Statistics, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated excellence and promise in both research and teaching.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly with biological and environmental scientists.
  • Potential to contribute to development of the Mathematical Biology group and to collaborate successfully with USU’s quantitative biology/ecology community.
  • Documented potential to increase the Department’s diversity profile, directly or indirectly.
