Overview

Serves as a coordinator for projects, directs teams as assigned by Foreman and assures the security to campus buildings and equipment for all University departments. Installs, maintains, and repairs access controls, locks, key systems, safes, and door hardware.  Accomplishes this by applying journeyman skills and positive attitude in conjunction with advanced technical knowledge, the ability to analyze and understand unique project requests or customer concerns, and established leadership skills.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates projects and schedules work to ensure timely completion and quality standards, as needed.
  • Performs customer service duties by checking in and following up with customers and ensuring that their needs are met.
  • Leads, guides, and trains other technicians in applicable procedures and techniques.
  • Coordinates with campus police and the Fire Marshall concerning security and fire code equipment.
  • Coordinates with and advises Campus Planning and other university entities on decisions concerning keying and security of new construction and remodeling.
  • Prepares labor and materials estimates for repairs, renovation projects, and new buildings.
  • Estimates, orders, and maintains inventory for key, lock and other exit devices.
  • Maintains and oversees all records for the lock-shop including floor plans, access controls, and master key systems, to ensure accurate and current information.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs all types of locks and locking mechanisms on-campus to conform to current federal, state, and campus safety and security regulations.
  • Maintains, repairs, and changes the combinations of safes on-campus.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems when they occur with locks and electronic key card systems to find solutions and resolve problems.
  • Cuts, duplicates, programs and issues keys or proximity cards according to requests for various campus entities in coordination with supervisor and university police.
  • Handles administrative responsibilities in the absence of the Foreman.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Interprets keying guidelines; uses appropriate discretion and special knowledge of lock systems to preserve the integrity of the University’s master key system while meeting customer requests.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned such as assisting carpenters in basic carpentry assignments.
  • Programs and maintains University access control system.
  • Installs EAC.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 4 years directly related work experience in locksmithing.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with electronic access control
  • CRL or ICRL Certification

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of keys, keyways, key manufacturers, key duplication machines, and key duplication techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of function, grades, and the methods of installation of locking hardware.
  • Basic computer skills. 
  • Records maintenance skills.

  • Skill in the use of various hand and power tools applicable to trade.
  • Ability to cut and issue keys, re-key, install and repair locks and hardware.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and customers.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Knowledge of key codes and master keying techniques.
  • Knowledge of safes, safe locks, and safe maintenance techniques.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair electronic key card systems.
