Overview

The Utah State University Eastern Director of Athletics is responsible for the development, management, coordination and supervision of a competitive NJCAA intercollegiate athletics program. The Director of Athletics also:

  • Provides visionary leadership, strategic planning and development for the athletics program;
  • Maintains an athletics program that is committed to the mission of the college;
  • Administers the overall athletic budget; and
  • Recruits and manages the coaching staff.

Responsibilities

  • Represent and promote the university and athletic programs at sports-related and non-sports-related events; be highly visible and actively engaged on campus and in the community.
  • Understanding and adhering to the rules, regulations, and eligibility requirements of the National Junior College Athletic Association, Region 18, Scenic West Athletic Conference and the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.
  • Provide mentoring, leadership, and supervision of all coaches and other department staff including student workers. Responsible for managing athletic program, a fitness center, and intramurals.
  • Prepares and administers staff performance evaluations.
  • Directs and hires coaches who are committed not only to winning but to the welfare of students.
  • Supports and encourages the current academic standards and expectations of all Utah State University Eastern student-athletes.
  • Collaborates with the Chief Campus Administrator/Associate Vice President all athletic matters.
  • Reviews and updates the student athletics handbook.
  • Serves as the administrator for primary and special event such as tournaments and regionals.
  • Handles student athlete discipline, relative to the student athlete handbook, and in coordination with the Student Conduct office when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Experience in intercollegiate athletics (or related field)
  • Budgetary experience
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Demonstrated commitment to student success

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters' Degree
  • Outstanding leadership and supervisory skills to develop, manage, and inspire a talented and diverse professional staff
  • A significant portion of the candidate’s experience in the higher education environment is preferred

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Successful budget and administrative management experience and skills
  • Strong communication skills: writing, speaking, and listening
  • The ability to establish effective working relationships with academic deans and faculty for program promotion
  • Ability to plan, assist and supervise staff
  • Ability to communicate and work with a broad range of people. 
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job
  • Effective communication skills

The Utah State University Eastern Athletic Department competes in the Scenic West Athletic Conference, one of the most competitive of the National Junior College Athletic Association. With 11 intercollegiate athletic teams including men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, volleyball, softball, baseball, Spirit Squad (Cheer and dance), E-Sports, and Rodeo, the USU Eastern athletic Department has a reputation for success on and off the field/court/arena/gaming system.
