USU Extension in Salt Lake County is seeking a creative and positive person to support the programming efforts and general operations of Extension Home and Community Department faculty. Hours will be Monday-Friday 8am to 5pm in the USU Extension Office in Salt Lake City. This is a full-time benefited position. Applicants should be able to work well independently and as part of a team. Some evening and weekend work will be necessary.


  • Assume standard office duties, including word processing, copying, faxing, scanning, editing, mailing, phone reception, email, taking meeting minutes, and creating spreadsheets. Will become familiar with, and stay up to date on, USU Extension policies related to business services.
  • Assist USU Extension home and community department faculty in the organization and marketing of programs. Develop materials to promote community outreach and programming, including assisting faculty in the development of PowerPoint presentations and other educational materials, as well as flyers, brochures, banners, and postcards. Responsibilities include keeping website, event pages, and social media up-to-date and accurate, and marketing classes and programs.
  • Work cooperatively with USU Extension home and community faculty and other USU staff on a variety of programming needs, including personal finances, housing, relationships, health promotion/education, nutrition, and food preservation programs. Applicant must be willing to work both independently and as part of a team. Collaborate with faculty to continuously improve programming.
  • Assist home and community faculty with program- and project-related reporting and operations by maintaining and organizing budgets, completing travel paperwork, purchasing materials and supplies, and tracking and managing program data.
  • Create and manage home and community program registration processes and organize and maintain participant rosters. Serve as point of contact for program participants.
  • Assist county director and home and community faculty as needed.
  • Assist with front desk, phone reception, cash machine, and other duties as needed.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in an office setting or an associate degree/vocational training is required. 
  • Self-motivated and able to accomplish a variety of tasks without direct supervision and able to adhere to deadlines.
  • Demonstrate professional work manner and ethic.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills and ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficient knowledge of a variety of Microsoft programs such as word, excel, and other basic computer operations.
  • Must display exceptional human relation skills and be able to pleasantly interact with a variety of individuals.
  • Must be able to work effectively with supervisors, clientele, co-workers, volunteers and professionals.
  • Some flexibility in work schedule required for occasional evening and Saturday programs.
  • The selected candidate will be required to pass a background check, in connection to assisting with youth programs.
  • Skilled with using social media, including, but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and four years of work experience as an administrative assistant.
  • Motivated individual with a creative thought process.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Experience creating spreadsheets for data entry and report generation.
  • Strong editing skills.
  • Excellent budget tracking skills.
  • Background in family and consumer sciences or related field (e.g., social sciences).
  • Knowledge of cooperative extension services.
  • Ability to speak, understand, and write in Spanish.
  • Easy-going demeanor with a positive, up-beat attitude.
  • Graphic design ability and experience using design programs, such as Canva, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign or others.
