Overview

Our GEAR UP program is seeking to hire a mentor who has strong written, verbal and communication skills along with problem-solving skills to assist and guide students, as well as provide tutoring to our middle school students with knowledge in all subject areas, especially Math. They will provide and coordinate activities to improve the number of students who have knowledge and experience of different colleges and careers available, encourage high academic achievement in order to obtain goals of attending college and pursuing a career of interest. This is a grant funded position and the continuation of this position is contingent on the availability of grant funds and the successful application of grant awards.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a mentor and positive role model for GU students
  • Assists GU students with homework, summer school, and other academic activities
  • Communicates with GU students/families/guardians via phone, text, or email
  • Promotes GU activities, contributes to GU social media content and GU newsletters
  • Participates in GU training, staff meetings, college campus and career site visits, activities, and events
  • Submits required paperwork, time and efforts logs, and reports according to University and GEAR UP deadlines, policies and practices

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Utah driver’s license to perform essential job responsibilities, such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials -in order to complete necessary work-related travel assignments
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent intercultural communication skills for working with diverse groups of people
  • Excellent critical thinking, decision-making & problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational, time management, and leadership skills
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Ability to work independently since traveling to/from Carbon schools may be required
  • Ability to handle confidential information
  • Ability to follow FERPA and institutional policies, regulations and procedures
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook email, Google Calendar Adobe Acrobat, Mac and/or PC platform 
  • Job offer contingent upon the successful completion of a background check

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in an Associate's Degree or Undergraduate program at USU Eastern
  • Currently enrolled USU Eastern or transfer student
  • Fluency in Spanish conversation, reading, and writing
  • Have no active or pending conduct sanctions through the Director of Student's Office
