Overview

Multiple positions are available to work with Utah State University Wildland Resources faculty in collaboration with the Bureau of Land Management Vernal Field Office (VFO) to conduct field work in the Uintah Basin of Northeastern Utah to:

  • Perform Threatened & Endangered plant surveys
  • Assess changes in T & E plant population densities

Botany Crew Interns will support the management mandate of the VFO to monitor Threatened & Endangered plant populations. Known populations will be visited and known specimens will be monitored. Additional unmapped specimens within known populations will be marked with UTMs. Work proposed here will generate spatial data of plant localities and provide a comparison to assess whether populations have changed since previous surveys.

 

Positions are funded for no more than 29 hrs/wk for 14 weeks each, May 9th-June 30th or August 12th. Preference will be given to qualified Utah State University students. Preference will also be given to applicants that can be present during the entire field season. Crew member compensation will be $15/hr. and Crew lead compensation will be $17.00/hr. No housing is provided with this position. The duty station for these positions is Vernal, Utah.

 

Interns will make field observations of wildlife or vegetation according to protocol, collect data, and enter data. They will collaborate with teammates and the crew lead to collect and assemble a high quality data set in an efficient manner. Work may be conducted in a team setting or independently. Review of applicants will begin 1 April 2022 and continue until all positions are filled.

Responsibilities

  • CPR/Wilderness First Aid Certification
  • Conduct field surveys independently after training
  • Plant identification and quantification following protocol
  • Travel to field sites, driving 4WD vehicle on unmaintained dirt roads
  • Follow protocols for plant surveys with emphasis on minimizing disturbance
  • GPS management to find and monitor or map study sites
  • Data entry under direction of the crew lead
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience identifying plants
  • Demonstrated fieldwork experience
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to follow safety regulations
  • Driver's license and experience driving 4WD vehicles in order to travel to field sites
  • Ability to efficiently execute directives and study plan
  • Ability to collaborate with crewmates and follow team lead

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional fieldwork experience
  • Professional plant identification experience or certifications
  • GIS, GPS, or orienteering experience
  • Experience with detailed survey protocols
  • Experience with mountaineering
  • Data entry experience
  • Demonstrated strong performance in relevant coursework, including but not limited to one or more classes in a topic such as botany, ornithology or mammalogy, biology, ecology, natural resource management, or GIS
