Overview

The Journeyman Carpet Layer performs general and advanced floor covering preparation and installation to maintain, repair, and install all types of floor coverings used in USU facilities. The incumbent accomplishes this by applying journeyman level skills in conjunction with following instructions or using technical knowledge and following established guidelines. Incumbent will work as a member of a team under direct supervision or with limited supervision on various projects or assignments. 

Responsibilities

  • Performs the installation, maintenance, or repairs of all types of floor coverings including: carpeting, rubber, vinyl composite, tile, wood laminate, urethane, etc.
  • Prepares basic layouts for floor coverings.
  • Measures and cuts covering material according to blueprints and sketches.
  • Prepares surfaces for floor coverings installation; including removal of current floor covering, sweeping, scraping, sanding, or chipping of dirt and irregularities from base surfaces, filling cracks, and patching uneven surfaces to form a smooth, clean foundation.
  • Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  • Completes building audits for assigned locations to evaluate the condition of floor coverings and identify any repairs that are needed. 
  • Provides technical guidance and direction to less senior technicians.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned such as assists work in the other areas of the Finishes shop such as; painting, upholstery, and signage. 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four years of directly related work experience with carpet laying or floor coverings.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Skilled with various hand and power tools common to trade.
  • Knowledge of different types of floor coverings and installation and repair techniques.
  • Knowledge of repair process for walls and surfaces.
  • Ability to select and apply paint.
  • Knowledge of various types of painting and finishing materials and application techniques.
  • Ability to take direction from supervisors.

Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects.  Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
