Overview

The Department of Communicative Disorders and Deaf Education at Utah State University is seeking a term appointment at the rank of Professional Practice Instructor or Lecturer in the Deaf Education program. The successful candidate will have a background in ASL instruction. 

 

Located on the main campus in Logan, Utah, this is a non-tenure track position and is .75 FTE for nine months during the academic year beginning August 2022. Review of applications will begin April 2022 and will continue until the position is filled. This position is not eligible for remote work.

Responsibilities

  1. Coordinate and supervise the ASL Labs associated with course requirements in beginning, intermediate, and advanced ASL classes.
  2. Assess student ASL competencies and provide constructive and relevant feedback.
  3. Edit video materials for lab instructional activities.
  4. Teach American Sign Language instruction classes, facilitating learning opportunities through coursework and in the ASL lab.
  5. Work within a collaborative team in the department's Deaf Education program.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • To be considered at the Professional Practice Instructor level, a Bachelor degree is required with enrollment in a Master’s degree program, in an area of study related to ASL teaching and deaf education services, within an expected completion within four years.

  • To be considered at the Lecturer level, a Master’s degree in a field related to ASL teaching and deaf education services.

  • Advanced proficiency in American Sign Language as measured by a score of 3+ or higher on the ASLPI.
  • Basic knowledge of computer software programs (e.g., PowerPoint, Word, etc.)
  • Willingness to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team for deaf education services.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Score of 4 or higher on the ASLPI.
  • Experience teaching ASL instruction on the secondary or higher education level.
  • State or national certification with American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA), Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and/or National Interpreter Certification (NIC).
  • Experience with distance education delivery.
  • Experience in teaching bilingual-bicultural educational content.
  • Experience with an immersive ASL environment.
