College/Department Highlights

Since 1988 we’ve seen how quickly tool-based organizations decline in their ability to sustain results based on research performed by the Shingo Institute at Utah State University. Organizations that anchor their improvement initiatives to principles – or understand the “why” behind the “how” and the “what” – experience significantly different results. To best illustrate its findings, the Shingo Institute developed the Shingo Model™, the accompanying Shingo Guiding Principles and the Three Insights of Enterprise Excellence. The Shingo Model provides a powerful framework designed to guide the transformation of an organization’s culture toward achieving ideal results. It helps convey the findings of more than 30 years’ research on Shingo Prize recipient companies and, most importantly, the relationships and interactions between tools, systems, principles, culture, and results.

The Shingo Institute offers several educational opportunities, such as the Shingo Workshops (DISCOVER EXCELLENCE, SYSTEMS DESIGN, CULTURAL ENABLERS, CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT, ENTERPRISE ALIGNMENT, and BUILD EXCELLENCE), conferences, webinars, podcasts, benchmarking visits, study tours, and the Shingo MBA. The Shingo Institute is a program in the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University.
