The Sponsored Programs Office is looking for a motivated, dynamic, highly organized individual to join our team as a Grant and Contract Officer. This position will have a meaningful impact on faculty, staff, the development of our office, and will have the opportunity for significant professional development and career advancement within our office. This position is currently available for telework, standard work hours will be 8am-5pm. 


The Grant and Contract Officer (GCO) position will provide support for the submission, administration, negotiation, processing, and close out of grants, contracts, and other agreements for sponsored research projects across the University. The GCO will follow established processes and procedures and provide expertise, oversight, and support to assigned colleges, departments, faculty, principal investigators, and project staff. The GCO serves as the primary point of contact on matters related to their assigned sponsored projects and will be proficient in compliance monitoring and reporting, uniform guidance interpretations, contracting and negotiation, and sponsor relationships.


  • Act as a sponsor liaison for pre-award and post-award activities
  • Cultivate positive relationships with principal investigators and staff
  • Understand and follow SPO standard operating procedures, processes, duties, and tasks
  • Support external funding components in a timely manner
  • Demonstrate proficiency in and knowledge of applicable regulations
  • Engage in professional development and educational opportunities
  • Maintain signature authority to enter into agreements with sponsors on behalf of USU
  • Provide training to faculty and business services staff related to the management of sponsored awards, Kuali Research, sponsor requirements, Uniform Guidance, and other areas of compliance
  • Serve as an effective team player by showing loyalty to colleagues and support for department decisions
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualification:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus two years full time job experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years direct, full time experience in grant administration or office setting dealing with legal or regulatory compliance
  • Experience in higher education setting
  • Experience with a variety of federal sponsors such as NSF, Dept. of Education, NIH, NEHHS, DOE, DOD, etc.
  • Project management certification (PMI, CAPM, IPMA), Research Administration Certification (CRA, CPRA, CFRA)
  • Knowledge of Office of Management & Budget (OMB) Uniform Guidance and federal agency grant guidelines as it relates to sponsored projects
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Organizational skills and detail oriented
  • Ability to effectively problem solve
  • Ability to learn and use new or evolving technology, software, and database systems, including Kuali Research
  • Ability to analyze budgetary line items for compliance with budget guidelines

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes.  The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.
