Overview

Utah State University’s Department of Theatre Arts is seeking a full-time, nine-month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Design/Technology. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching in a university setting, professional experience in projection design, a secondary emphasis in lighting or scenic design, and demonstrate a commitment to mentoring and student success. The position is defined as 50% creative activity or research, 40% teaching, 10% service.  There is also the possibility of working with the Lyric Repertory Company, the department’s professional summer theatre.

 

This is a tenure-track position beginning with the 2023-2024 academic year anticipated to start in August 2023. Review of applications will begin January 6, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching to be assigned from the following courses:
    • Projection Design (Disguise, QLab)
    • Computer design in Theatre (Adobe Photo Shop, Premiere, After Effects, Illustrator)
    • Theatre Practicum
    • Special Topics within area of expertise.
    • Lighting Design and/or Scenic Design
    • Drafting for Theatre
  • Teach other classes as needed (Script Analysis, Understanding Theatre).
  • Oversee and mentor student designs in Projection Design for Departmental Productions.
  • Projection design for one major production per year (with a reduction in teaching responsibility). Faculty designs will depend on design students’ needs.
  • Creative endeavors, ongoing professional development, scholarship, and university service are expected.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • MFA in Theatre with a Design or Technical Theatre specialization
  • At least 1 year of teaching experience at the university level

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3 years of teaching experience at the university level
  • Experience teaching graduate students
  • Demonstrated passion and dedication to student success
  • Evidence of successful university teaching through student evaluation scores, awards, testimonials or other assessments

With approximately 100 students in the combined programs and a faculty that is continually active in the profession, the Department offers a robust slate of productions during the Utah State Theatre academic season. The professional arm of the Department is the Lyric Repertory Company, which provides USU students the opportunity to transition their craft from the academy to the profession, with productions during the summer as well as the academic year.
