Overview

The Colorado Plateau Dark Sky Cooperative brings together local, state, and federal land management agencies with tribal partners, businesses, and nonprofits to celebrate the cosmos, minimize the impact of outdoor lighting, protect and restore natural darkness, and promotes astronomy-based outdoor recreation and tourism. The Cooperative is managed by the Institute of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism at Utah State University in close consultation with the National Park Service’s Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division. The Cooperative is led by a Coordinator who facilitates communication between the diverse array of individuals and organizations who are working to preserve the quality of dark skies across the Plateau. The Cooperative Coordinator also serves as a liaison between these individuals and organizations and leadership within the Institute of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism at Utah State University and the National Park Service.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and facilitate monthly virtual meetings amongst the individuals and organizations involved in celebrating the cosmos, minimizing the impact of outdoor lighting, protecting and restoring natural darkness, and promoting astronomy-based outdoor recreation and tourism.
  • Developing and disseminating a monthly e-newsletter highlighting dark sky conservation and research efforts from across the Plateau.
    Serving as a liaison between these individuals and organizations and leadership within the Institute of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism at Utah State University and the National Park Service.
    • This specifically involves:
      • Monitoring the Cooperative’s email account and responding as necessary.
      • Soliciting input from the Cooperative’s partners on information and resources that can be shared through the Cooperative’s website (website development and management will be the responsibility of staff within the Institute of Outdoor Recreation and Tourism) or through the Cooperative’s monthly e-newsletter.
      • Representing the Cooperative when needed, and as available, at select events and to news media outlets.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience engaging with and/or managing cooperative networks of diverse interests, individuals, and organizations.
  • An understanding of the value and benefits of dark skies for both humans and wildlife.

Preferred Qualificaitons:

  • Exceptional listener and communicator who effectively conveys information verbally and in writing.
  • Strong organizational skills
