Overview

This position is responsible for producing compelling content that strategically communicates the goals and vision of the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services (EEJCEHS). The Director of PR and Marketing (Public Relations Specialist III) reports directly to the Dean of EEJCEHS and will (1) strategically lead and advocate for communicating the goals and successes of EEJCEHS to the University, the state, the nation, and the world; and (2) effectively supervise the EEJCEHS Public Relations and Marketing team on creative communication projects. Applicant must have a flexible work schedule for projects that go beyond the typical workday.

Responsibilities

  • Strategizes external communication and branding through collaboration with college leadership, department heads, center directors, and faculty to create content in line with those strategies.
  • Researches, writes, edits, and develops electronic and printed recruitment and communication materials to enhance the image and reputation of faculty, programs, departments, and the college. Developed content may include press kits, feature stories, proposals, and public service announcements.
  • Works with researchers to correctly interpret and convey research findings for the media and public.
  • Directs and plans social media strategy and content.
  • Supervises PR Writing Assistant and Graphic Design Assistant.
  • Ensures that all electronic and printed CEHS materials are in compliance with both college and university branding, press, and social media policies.
  • Collaborates with PR and Marketing team to develop electronic, print, and web development materials for annual events (e.g., scholarship and awards dinner, impact reports for donors).
  • Works closely with University Marketing and Communications to cover CEHS events and to widely release and publicize articles of national or global interest.
  • Participates in UMAC-led strategic communications weekly and quarterly meetings.
  • Responds to the college’s emergency communication needs by creating appropriate public-facing information and materials.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, advertising, communication, or related field plus four years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent communication portfolio.
  • Experience working with a wide range of technology, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Suite products and managing data in complex databases.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Evidence of excellent writing, proofreading and editing skills.
  • Evidence of the ability to vary language, style and tone of messages depending on the audience and communication channel.
  • Evidence of basic understanding of writing for search engine optimizations (SEO) and social media.
  • Experience in public relations or marketing in higher education.
  • Experience with developing and managing image creation/photo shoots.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.
  • Knowledge of publishing procedures and requirements, including desktop publishing (e.g., Adobe Suite).
  • Ability to meet deadlines and have superior organization, time management, and follow-through skills.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate media activities and promotional events.
  • Website/electronic media development skills.
  • Knowledge of journalism or public relations, marketing, and branding principles and techniques.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to read and interpret designs, specifications, and schematic drawings for the purpose of communications about building or renovation projects.
  • Ability to formulate and execute annual short and long-term marketing plans.
  • Ability to summarize and interpret facts and trends as they pertain to complicated academic materials.
  • Ability to move a project from concept to execution within established budgets and timelines.
