The successful candidate for the Social Media/Outreach Assistant position (Multimedia Technician I) will provide social media and outreach support under the supervision of the Institute on Disability, Research, Policy and Practice (IDRPP) PR Specialist to promote the Utah Assistive Technology Program, a disability-related organization within the Institute on Disability, Research, Policy and Practice that helps provide assistive technology services to Utahns with disabilities.


Duties will include networking with other organizations, making public and electronic presentations, attending events, curating a newsletter, creating marketing materials, and arranging for digital trainings for professionals and paraprofessionals in the assistive technology field. Accessibility of all content is a must. The Social Media/Outreach Assistant will work with the team at the IDRPP to coordinate and promote content.


The successful candidate must have excellent organization and communication skills and a solid understanding of networking, graphic design, and videography. A disability-related background is preferred. We prefer a bachelor’s in communications, journalism, public relations, or marketing.

Under the supervision of the IDRPP PR Specialist, the Social Media/Outreach Assistant will:

  • Social Media - 25%
    • Assist with planning, development, implementation, and monitoring of social media marketing strategies in order to increase brand awareness;
    • Assist with promoting campaigns, programs, events, and UATP locations; moderate content
    • Assist with the production, editing, delivery, and / or archiving videos and / or photography for use in print and digital media, historic documentation, and other needs as assigned;
    • Help evaluate the success of social media campaigns, posts and performance;
    • Stay up to date with social media best practices and technologies .
  • Networking - 30%
    • Attend and represent UATP at events. 
    • Attend council and networking meetings, offer prepared descriptions of UATP and its services.
  • Website - 30%
    • Assist with creating and posting website content; particularly blog posts.
  • Print design - 15%
    • Assist with the production of marketing materials such as brochures, pull-up banners and posters


Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of experience/education
  • Ability to perform content moderation in a professional way
  • Knowledge of video, photographic, and multimedia production, programming, and editing from inception to completion
  • A willingness to learn techniques for making digital content accessible
  • Knowledge of the elements and principles of design

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or marketing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of design for print publication, including crop and bleed, resolution and color requirements,
  • Knowledge of visual arts and photography methods, techniques, and processes
  • Knowledge of accessibility requirements and how to meet them;
  • Knowledge of writing and posting online content, including adhering to specific website style;
  • An understanding of various social media platforms, how to use them and what audience is likely to be reached on them.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • A willingness to work some evenings and weekends

The Institute for Disability Research, Policy, & Practice is one of the largest research and outreach centers at USU, and we are largely funded through grants, contracts, and fee-for-service programs. All staff positions at the IDRPP are contingent upon funding, and all senior staff at the IDRPP with graduate degrees are responsible for helping to generate funding to support our operations and growth.
