Overview

The successful candidate will perform complex work in the maintenance, repair, and installation of air compressors, vacuum pumps, and supply and exhaust fans for HVAC systems in campus facilities. The successful applicant can accomplish this by applying journeyman skills in conjunction with advanced technical knowledge and the ability to analyze and understand unique project requests.  Incumbents work as a member of a team on various projects or assignments.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventative maintenance inspections on air compressors, vacuum pumps, and supply and exhaust fans on campus.
  • Replaces all electrical and mechanical components as needed on all compressors.
  • Replaces electrical and mechanical components associated with supply and exhaust fans
  • Installs new air compressor units as needed.
  • Performs and follows established alignment procedures between sheaves on all fans and air compressors.
  • Performs tensioning of all v-belt applications according to industry specifications.
  • Installs air lines in rigid galvanized pipe of various sizes or copper pipe.
  • Accompanies vibration specialist, on a monthly basis, to monitor the condition of all supply fans.
  • Provides technical guidance and direction to other technicians.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Cleans equipment, shop area and work site.
  • Performs other miscellaneous duties as assigned, such as assists work in the other areas of the shop.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of four years directly related work experience in HVAC Mechanics or related field.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment and associated components.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electrical circuitry associated with air compressors and fans.
  • Skill in the use of test equipment common to the trade.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems and controls.
  • Skill in mathematical calculations including fan speeds using motor to fan ratios.
  • Knowledge of sheaves and bushings and their application on motion.
  • Knowledge of bearings and ability to make proper installations.
  • Skill in the use of various hand and power tools common to trade.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and applicable software.
  • Customer service skills.
  • Ability to work without supervision.
  • Ability to read, understand and build to specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and customers.
