Overview

Utah State University Extension invites applications for a County Extension faculty, 12 month, tenure track position. Extension faculty develop, implement, evaluate, and coordinate research-based educational programs to enhance quality of life for youth and adults. Extension faculty also recruit, train and supervise volunteer leaders and serve as a liaison between local clientele, other resource agencies, and Utah State University administrators, faculty, and programs. This Extension position includes university responsibilities and is based in Sevier County.


An office will be provided at the USU Extension office in Richfield, county seat of Sevier County.


Sevier County is located in central Utah. It is a county with breath taking scenery and rich Native American history. More than half the land in Sevier County is National Forest. Capitol Reef National Park, Fishlake National Forest, and Manti-La Sal National Forest all are within the boundaries of Sevier County. Richfield is within a two-hour drive of Capitol Reef and Bryce Canyon National Park Visitor Centers. In addition, beautiful Fish Lake in the high elevation Fish Lake plateau provides many recreation opportunities. Snow College, a career and technical college has a campus in Richfield. Livestock production and field crops are important industries for Sevier County.


The position requires knowledge of livestock production (especially beef cattle), range management, and production agriculture (alfalfa and grass hay). We welcome candidates with diverse interests and experience related to these areas.


The estimated start date for this position is March 1, 2023.


Rank will be commensurate with experience, qualifications and current rank. Appointment opportunities include Extension Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track), or Professional Practice Extension Assistant Professor (non-tenure track).  A Master's degree is required for Extension Assistant or Associate ranks. A Bachelor's degree and substantial professional experience is required for the Professional Practice Extension Assistant Professor

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to Extension activities such as livestock production, small acreage pasture management, range management and general agricultural production.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate agricultural programs for adults.
  • Serve as technical advisor and Executive Secretary for the Utah Beef Improvement Association Performance Bull Test.
  • Develop partnerships and employ innovative approaches to reach clientele and new audiences.
  • Provide support to the County Fair and Livestock Show when needed to foster relationships with local producers and community members.
  • Work with on-campus specialists in developing applied research projects and program development and delivery to clientele.
  • Pursue internal and external funding to support Extension programming.
  • Document impacts and produce scholarly publications based on Extension programming.
  • Manage budgets, personnel, and volunteers.
  •  Serve diverse audiences and support the civil rights mandate of Utah State University Extension.
  • Serve and collaborate with other Extension and University personnel, community and government agencies, and stakeholders.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned master’s degree in the areas of animal science, range management or other closely related agricultural field.
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct educational programs.
  • Experience in teaching adult and youth audiences.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Ability to act as a liaison between federal, state, university, and county clientele.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with program development and/or delivery related to beef production and pasture management.
  • Experience with program development and/or delivery related to range management.
  • Skills and experience with implementing applied research activities.
  • Skills and experience in writing scholarly publications.
  • Skills and experience with grant writing.
  • Skills and experience with recruiting, supervising, and working with volunteers.
  • Skills and experience with low income and under-served audiences.
  • Skills and experience with social media.
  • Skills and experience in developing on-line courses.
  • Skills and experience with related organizations/agencies and fostering positive relationships with community stakeholders.
  • Prior experience with the Land Grant University System.
  • Ability to converse and write in the Spanish language.
