Overview

The Prehistoric Museum at USU Eastern is looking to fill a Visitor Center Graduate Assistant position for the 2023-2024 academic year. This is a 12 month appointment that is renewable for a second (and potentially third) year. This position works Saturdays and Sundays at the Visitor Center desk and is primarily responsible for answering visitor questions about the region and its resources.


This position is responsible for greeting visitors and directing them to the resources at the visitor center. They are also expected to provide accurate information and reliable directions to recreation destinations, lodging, dining options and other items of interest in the county and region.

The compensation package for the GARHD is:

  • $1000 a month Stipend
  • Full tuition waiver up to 6 credit hours per semester (in-state or out-state tuition, plus differential tuition. Student and course fees are to be paid by the student. Student is required to have insurance (can waive the mandatory university subsidized insurance if student has equivalent insurance coverage).

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Greets & welcomes visitors upon their arrival and helps orient them to the area
  • Accurately answer visitor questions regarding a wide variety of topics including general questions, directional questions and questions about tourism & other attractions in the area by utilizing information received during training.
  • Helps monitors and controls visitor flow into Museum spaces at entry and exit points.
  • Reports any issues with visitor flow to Weekend Supervisor.
  • Responds to visitor concerns and complaints by utilizing information received during training.
  • Provides professional, efficient, and approachable support and excellent customer service to visitors and locals alike.
  • Answers the telephone; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
  • Organizes and maintains the Carbon Corridor Visitor Center. This includes re-stocking materials and checking general cleanliness and addressing issues.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree
  • Enrollment in Utah State University Graduate Studies Program
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of administrative practices; organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently and meet multiple task deadlines
  • Understanding of and commitment to a diverse campus community; ability to communicate effectively with individuals from a variety of diverse backgrounds

This position requires moderate physical effort.  Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including lifting up to 25 pounds, walking and standing.  Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
