Overview

The Department of Data Analytics and Information Systems in the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University invites applications for a non-tenure-track nine-month Professional Practice Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, with an anticipated starting date of August 1, 2023.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will focus on teaching and student mentoring in the department’s cybersecurity programs, and on the role of cybersecurity within the Intermountain Intelligence, Industry, and Security Consortium (I3SC) in collaboration with USU’s Center for Anticipatory Intelligence. I3SC is a workforce development pipeline program that prepares USU students across a wide range of disciplines to advance innovation and help secure Utah's emerging technology sector.

 

Teaching responsibilities within the department’s cybersecurity program focus on hands-on experiences for students with technologies that are in high-demand in today’s workforce, including information and network security, internet and data communication, penetration testing, cloud computing and applications, digital forensics, modern enterprise security, and others. The curriculum is continually expanding as industry demands change and we welcome unique course offerings from prospective candidates.

 

Successful candidates will bring deep industry experience with a passion and proven track record of excellence in teaching and mentoring.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications for the professional practice assistant professor level:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Applied professional cybersecurity experience within business, marketing, finance, or the public sector.
  • Experience teaching cybersecurity in a college or university setting.

Preferred qualifications for the professional practice assistant professor level:

  • Strong record of student mentoring.
  • Expertise with network architecture and security.
  • Familiarity with database applications and platforms for big-data applications, such as SQL or Oracle.
  • Familiarity with programming languages, such as Python, Java, C++, R, Julia, or others used for data science and analytics applications.
  • Knowledge of cloud computing platforms.
  • Experience with mobile app development.
  • Background in tech entrepreneurship.

Minimum and preferred qualifications for the professional practice associate professor level include those listed for the professional practice assistant professor level and also include:

  • At least five years of applied professional cybersecurity experience within business, marketing, finance, or the public sector.
  • At least five years of experience teaching and mentoring students in cybersecurity within a college or university setting.

Minimum and preferred qualifications for the professional practice professor level include those listed for the professional practice associate professor level and also include:

  • At least ten years of applied professional cybersecurity experience within business, marketing, finance, or the public sector.
  • At least ten years of experience teaching and mentoring students in cybersecurity within a college or university setting.

The Department of Data Analytics and Information Systems (DAIS) provides an outstanding opportunity for students to gain the skills and experience needed in an increasingly data-driven world, and to use information and data technologies to inform strategic decision-making in the private and public sectors. Students in DAIS learn how to problem-solve with advanced database management, programming, and analytics tools, collaborating with faculty who are at the forefront of these fields. Students also have the opportunity to network and apply their learning in real-world settings, through internships, student clubs, and Huntsman School events. The future Analytics Solutions Center within the DAIS department will house the ongoing projects that have been developed over the past two years with external partners and sponsors. These collaborations provide a key experiential opportunity for students to work on real-world analytics problems under the guidance of faculty and partner mentors.
