Overview

USU Extension in Washington County is in search of an individual who is upbeat and imaginative to fill the role of a Staff Assistant. The position requires 30 hours per week and provides benefits. The ideal candidate should possess the ability to function proficiently both independently and within a team. The position may require work in the evenings and on weekends. The Staff Assistant II will report to the Washington County Extension Director, and the job will concentrate on aiding the 4-H program coordinators and USU Extension faculty in providing youth programming throughout Washington County. Examples of potential areas of interest for the program include but are not limited to equestrian, junior livestock, shooting sports, healthy living, sewing, outdoor recreation, cooking, leadership, public speaking, robotics, coding, and gardening.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of educational 4-H programs for youth in the areas of horse and livestock (e.g., hogs, lambs, cattle, and goats).
  • Coordinate the organization of the Washington County Fair Animal Education Center.
  • Coordinate the organization of elementary school field trips (i.e., Farm Field Days, Washington County Water Fair).
  • Assist in the coordination and program delivery of 4-H horse and livestock shows, K-9 competitions, robotics tournaments, coding competitions, sewing conferences, and iSEE class enrichment.
  • Build relationships with local equine and livestock organizations, businesses, and individuals.
  • Assist in recruiting, training, and managing 4-H volunteers.
  • Meet regularly with 4-H volunteer councils to plan activities and events (e.g., shows, competitions, demonstrations, and contests etc.)
  • Participate in 4-H In-service and other USU Extension professional development conferences and events to stay current on industry best practices.
  • Monitor 4-H program finances, recruit sponsors, and submit applications for funding.
  • Maintain an accurate 4-H database of records in ZSuite and regularly collect evaluation data for impact reporting.
  • Provide client support by covering the front office reception area when needed.
  • Promote the Washington County 4-H program and its offerings to the broader community, especially underserved audiences.
  • Serve diverse audiences and support the civil rights mandate of Utah State University Extension.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of experience in an office setting or an associate degree/vocational training

  • High school diploma/GED or aptitude
  • Ability to communicate effectively with youth, volunteers, and community stakeholders
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct educational programs
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
  • Valid driver's license - employee will be required to drive a county vehicle

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in equine and/or livestock education and management
  • Knowledge of 4-H program policies and procedures, skills and experience with recruiting, supervising, and working with volunteers
  • Experience with low income and under-served audiences
  • Experience in working with youth and adults
  • Familiarity with using social media outlets
  • Skills and experience with related organizations/agencies and fostering positive relationships with community stakeholders
