Utah State University Extension in Carbon County is seeking a summer 2023 technician to assist in applied research on sheep grazing effects on riparian noxious weeds. Activities will include vegetation and forage quantification, tracking grazing behavior, and caring for sheep during research activities. Duties will include both field and office work. Field work may include short-term overnight primitive camping but it will be minimal. Travel to field site (50 miles) will typically be provided but a mileage reimbursement for personal vehicle use will be given when rarely required.

• Care for and contain sheep during grazing trial runs and during holding periods
• Quantify vegetation coverage through established transect protocol
• Quantify sheep grazing behavior to assess forage preferences and tolerances
• Perform treatments according to experimental protocol and record data
• Data entry, project support, and reporting will be done in an office setting

• Ability to collect research data according to experimental protocol while paying attention to detail and utilizing critical thinking will be essential. Work may be done both independently and part of a team as the task dictates.
• Comfortability with occasional overnight primitive camping needed as it may be required dependent on grazing sites.
• Undergraduate coursework or field experience in Natural Resources, Biology, Agriculture, or Animal Science Fields is preferred. Priority will be given to students pursuing related degrees or experiences.
• Prior experience with small ruminant livestock care/husbandry, fencing technique, and grazing management is highly desirable.
• Must be able to travel independently as needed and comply with all USU policies.
• Schedule flexibility will be needed but work days will be planned as far in advance as possible.

The environment and physical requirements may change depending on the specific function of the work each department performs. Incumbents may be in both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, in an office space, event space, or public space are protected from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents may nearly continuously sit and often use repetitive hand motion (such as typing).

Outdoors, incumbents may not be protected from weather conditions and may be exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold. Additionally, indoor or outdoor work environments may include being confined or in narrow spaces for periods of time. The incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises or vibrations from equipment, and conditions that may affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and poor ventilation. Bending, crawling, and crouching may be required. Incumbents may be required to lift, push, and/or pull objects up to 50 pounds and be required to walk and/or stand for long periods of time.
