Overview

The ASPIRE NSF Engineering Research Center (ERC) at Utah State University (USU) has an immediate opening for a Computer Technician (Computer Technician Lead). This individual is responsible for research lab IT infrastructure including: network architecture and servers, website, software and license management, desktop support, information security, and the development of process workflows to support ongoing research. The Computer Technician will be involved in the development exciting new technology by supporting research efforts to deploy hardware both at the USU and at demonstration partner sites.

Responsibilities

  1. IT Support – provide daily technical support for faculty, staff, and student research assistants. Including procurement, deployment and maintenance of IT equipment (e.g. desktops, laptops, printers, routers).  Image PCs and deploy software using SCCM. Troubleshoot engineering software and hardware related issues. Attend to all IT support requests in the department. Maintain a detailed inventory of computers and manage all software licenses.
  2. Network Management – support connection of smart devices (e.g. power monitors, supplies, electric charge equipment) on local private network and all other devices on campus network. Manage network file share access using security groups. Configure Group Policy Objects for effective computer management and maintain users/PCs in Active Directory.
  3. Server Administration – manage Linux Apache web servers and MySQL databases. Administer to GitLab user access. Setup and install new server hardware. Manage Windows Server 2012 and others both physical and virtual (Hyper-V and VMWare). Maintain security protocols (HTTPS, SSL, and SSH access management). Manage licensing servers and renew software licenses. Manage server applications used for  cameras and access control at the Electric Vehicle Roadway building (EVR).
  4. Data Management – maintain regular backups for internal servers and maintain security of shared data. Manage cloud storage interface (Box). Establish workflows and documentation for end users. Provide consultation for data management and give solutions to better centralize data/server infrastructure across the center.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Management Information System (BIS), Computer Science (CS), or related field; OR an Associate's degree or certification in a designated field plus 2 years of related work experience; OR four years of work experience in desktop management and support.
  • Experience in managing and deploying IT equipment and maintaining servers.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Basic understanding of Linux command line
  • Experience with Active Directory and Group Policy
  • Experience with SCCM and PXE Boot
  • Experience with configuring Hyper-V virtual machines
  • Active CompTIA A+ is preferred
  • Experience with PHP, CSS and Javascript is a plus
