Overview

Utah State University (USU) Libraries seeks a collaborative, innovative, and service-minded Librarian to manage the record ingestion and metadata transformation routines for the Libraries’ electronic and print resources. The Discovery Services Librarian will oversee the discovery and access of electronic resources and streaming media, as well as advise and assist on the bulk metadata transformation routines for print resources. The successful applicant will work in a dynamic, collaborative environment with support for professional growth and development.

 

USU Libraries is currently wrapping up a realignment process that will position the Libraries to be agile and at the forefront of changing user needs. We anticipate this will be completed Fall 2023. Please note that these new alignments may not be reflected on the Libraries’ website or public presences until the end of the process. Current information on the new organizational structure can be requested from Carol Kochan or Becky Skeen. The successful applicant will report to the chair overseeing collection management.

 

The position is a 12-month, tenure track faculty appointment with rank as Assistant Librarian. The position is open fall 2023 and the start date is negotiable.

Responsibilities

  • 75% Librarianship Responsibilities
    • Extract, transform, enrich, and/or load metadata records at scale
    • Analyze, standardize, and maintain processes and procedures for the batch ingest and management of bibliographic metadata
    • Perform complex or specialized batch cataloging and import operations, primarily focusing on batch manipulation of MARC records
    • Collaborate with colleagues to ensure that the bibliographic and holdings metadata for library collections are up to date and accurate in the Libraries’ discovery systems
    • Serve as point person for consortium sharing projects
    • Run reports and provide analytics from Library Services Platform (LSP)
    • Provide quality control for cataloging and metadata work, according to established national and local standards
    • Engage with, suggest improvements to, and/or create new cataloging and metadata workflows
    • Keep current with new and emerging tools, technology, and standards changes
    • Document workflows and develop trainings for student and staff on best practices and workflows
    • Work across the library to help standardize workflows and communication
  • 15% Research and Creative Endeavors Responsibilities:
    • Contribute to the fields of cataloging, metadata, collection development, electronic resources, or librarianship through original research or scholarly outputs (presentations, publications, white papers, standards development, exhibits, etc.)
  • 10% Service Responsibilities:
    • Contribute to the fields of cataloging, metadata, collection development, electronic resources, or librarianship by serving on university, local, regional, national, or international committees

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited MLS, or equivalent degree, by start date. An appointment as affiliate librarian will be considered for those who complete degree requirement by December 2023.
  • Experience with metadata schemas, controlled vocabularies, and cataloging standards, such as MARC, RDA, LCSH, etc. in a professional or educational capacity
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant cataloging/metadata tools and systems (for example: MarcEdit, OCLC Connexion, ClassWeb, or OpenRefine)
  • Experience working with a Library Services Platform (LSP), such as Sierra, Alma, FOLIO, or Worldshare Management Services, etc.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to practices that foster inclusion and belonging
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including listening, speaking, and writing
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to set and follow through on both individual and team priorities
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing assignments and needs
  • Ability to meet the university's requirements for promotion and tenure

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Project management experience
  • Experience cataloging in MARC or other common schemas in an academic library setting
  • Experience writing technical and procedural documentation
  • Familiarity with OCLC applications including Connexion, Record Manager, CollectionManager, etc.
  • Knowledge of constructing SQL queries
  • Familiarity with the information seeking behaviors of students and faculty
  • Working knowledge of acquisitions, cataloging, circulation, or other workflows supported by a Library Services Platform (LSP)

Salary minimum of $55,000, plus excellent benefits including a 14.2% (starting at $7,810) annual retirement contribution.
