The Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for a Professional Practice Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at the Logan, Utah main campus. This is a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure track position with a start date of August, 2024. We particularly seek applications from individuals with criminal justice teaching experience at the university level and experience working in law enforcement.

The position has a role assignment of 55% teaching, 35% administration, and 10% service. The successful candidate will be responsible for working with law enforcement and corrections stakeholders in Utah. Specifically, the successful candidate will work with those stakeholders to determine the educational needs of law enforcement and corrections personnel in Utah, work with faculty in the Criminal Justice program at USU to design curriculum to address those needs, and recruit law enforcement and corrections personnel to USU to further their education.  Additional responsibilities include:

• Teaching lower and upper-division courses in the criminal justice program
• Work with law enforcement agencies in Utah to determine the educational needs of officers and develop a pathway to the USU Criminal Justice bachelor’s degree for current law enforcement officers
• Develop a marketing strategy to recruit current law enforcement officers into the USU Criminal Justice bachelor’s degree
• Advise and mentor students who enroll at USU and pursue their Criminal Justice bachelor’s degree
• Providing service to the department, the university, and the profession
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• MA/MS in criminal justice/criminology or a closely related social science discipline at the time of appointment
• Experience working in law enforcement.

Preferred Qualifications:

• PhD in criminal justice/criminology or a closely related social science discipline at the time of appointment
• Experience working in law enforcement administration
• Experience teaching undergraduate courses in criminal justice
• Marketing experience

The Criminal Justice program offers a bachelor’s degree in a dynamic interdisciplinary department that includes Sociology and Anthropology. The program began offering a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice in 2024 to meet to growing demand in Utah for skilled criminal justice professionals. The program partners closely with the USU Department of Social Work to provide cross-training in applied criminal justice and social work methods. The Criminal Justice program is in the USU College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which offers a diverse array of technical training with a focused in community engaged methods intended to meet the workforce needs of Utah’s students and citizens.
