Overview

Utah State University Extension invites applications for a County Extension faculty,12-month, tenure track or professional practice position. Extension faculty develop, implement, evaluate, and coordinate research-based educational programs to enhance quality of life for youth and adults. Extension faculty also recruit, train and supervise volunteer leaders and serve as a liaison between local clientele, other resource agencies, and Utah State University administrators, faculty, and programs. This Extension position includes university responsibilities and is based in Duchesne County.


Duchesne County is located in eastern Utah. It is a county that encompasses much of the east-west Uinta mountain range. The county's highest point is also the highest peak in Utah, which is King’s Peak at 13,528 feet. Roosevelt is the largest city in the county. The county seat is in Duchesne City, with other communities of Altamont, Myton, Neola and Tabiona. Agriculture, oil and gas production and tourism are the main industries for Duchesne County

The position requires knowledge of livestock production (especially beef cattle), production agriculture (alfalfa and grass hay), and 4-H agriculture programs (Jr. Livestock, 4-H Horse). We welcome candidates with diverse interests and experience related to these areas.

 

The anticipated start date for this position is May 20, 2024.

 

Rank will be commensurate with experience, qualifications and current rank. Appointment opportunities include Extension Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure track), or Professional Practice Extension Assistant Professor (non-tenure track).  A Master's degree is required for Extension Assistant or Associate ranks. A Bachelor's degree and substantial professional experience is required for the Professional Practice Extension Assistant Professor.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to Extension activities such as livestock production, pasture management, rangeland management, insect and weed control and general agricultural production.
  • Develop, implement and evaluate agricultural programs for adults.
  • In partnership with the 4-H Coordinator, develop, implement and evaluate 4-H agricultural educational programs for youth such as Jr. Livestock and 4-H Horse Programs.
  • Develop partnerships and employ innovative approaches to reach clientele and new audiences.
  • Work with on-campus specialists in developing applied research projects and program development and delivery to clientele.
  • Pursue internal and external funding to support Extension programming.
  • Document impacts and produce scholarly publications based on Extension programming.
  • Manage budgets, personnel, and volunteers.
  • Serve diverse audiences and support the civil rights mandate of Utah State University Extension.
  • Serve and collaborate with other Extension and University personnel, community and government agencies, and stakeholders such as Farm Bureau and Conservation Districts.
  • Work in cooperation with the other county extension staff to provide beneficial programs to the county’s residents.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A completed Master’s degree (for tenure track) or a completed Bachelor's degree plus substantial professional experience (for professional practice track) in the areas of animal science, range science, Extension Education, Agriculture Education or other closely related agricultural fields.
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct educational programs.
  • Experience in teaching adult and youth audiences.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Ability to act as a liaison between federal, state, university, and county clientele.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Must have access to reliable transportation to and from work site.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with program development and/or delivery related to range management.
  • Experience with program development and/or delivery related to beef production, pasture management, and hay production.
  • Experience with program development and/or delivery related to 4-H Youth Agriculture programs.
  • Skills and experience with implementing applied research activities.
  • Skills and experience in writing scholarly publications.
  • Skills and experience with grant writing.
  • Skills and experience with recruiting, supervising, and working with volunteers.
  • Skills and experience with low income and under-served audiences.
  • Skills and experience with social media.
  • Skills and experience in developing online courses.
  • Skills and experience with related organizations/agencies and fostering positive relationships with community stakeholders.
  • Prior experience with the Land Grant University System.
