Overview

Dr. Roslynn Brain McCann of the Department of Environment and Society (ENVS) at Utah State University (USU) invites applications for the position of Utah Farmers Market Network (UFMN) Director to advance the mission of the Utah Farmers Market Network. Location flexible within Utah, with preference of Moab, Logan, or Salt Lake City.
 
This is a part-time position (up to 20 hours per week) through Utah State University (USU) at a rate of $29 an hour, funded through the United States Department of Agriculture Farmers Market and Local Food Promotion Program (USDA FMPP), ending December 2025. The position start date is May 13, 2024, with flexibility for a June start date depending on the final candidate’s schedule. The search committee includes representatives from USU Extension and Utah farmers’ market managers.
This position is telework eligible within the state of Utah.

Responsibilities

The director will be responsible for developing relationships with farmers markets and market stakeholders across Utah to nurture the development of and strengthen the Utah Farmers Market Network (UFMN). Major responsibilities include organizing network-wide virtual networking opportunities, meeting regularly with the UFMN leadership team, collaborating with state agencies and other personnel on grant-related activities, working with collaborators and interns on capturing the community and economic impact of markets, transitioning the UFMN, and applying for grant funding centralized on marketing to vendors and patrons. The director will also organize educational events for farmers’ market managers, including an annual one-day forum and training for new and beginning market managers. 
 
This role will also include developing a marketing campaign for National Farmers Market Week to provide outreach to the public about Utah farmers markets. Responsibilities will also include attending regular online meetings with USU faculty as part of the grant team, tracking outcomes and impacts, and authoring annual reports to the USDA on grant progress. Occasional day travel to markets and conferences will be required. In some cases and depending on where the director lives, overnight travel may be necessary (est. 5 nights/yr).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Earned undergraduate degree in agriculture, natural resources, sociology, family and consumer sciences, or a similar field.
  • Ability to coordinate with multiple partners, and stakeholders (both rural and urban), and effectively direct outreach to advance the visibility of farmers markets across the state.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Strong technology skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and Zoom.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects concurrently.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • A proven self-starter with at least two years of experience working in the food and/or agricultural marketing sector.
  • Experience as a farmers’ market manager or working for a farmers market, and conducting marketing campaigns.
  • Experience facilitating organizational networks, associations, coalitions, or communities of practice.
  • Familiarity with UFMN’s mission and UFMN’s past work in creating a welcoming environment for all at Utah farmers markets and ability to incorporate this into roles and responsibilities.
  • Experience in website design and maintenance.
  • Experience with grant writing.
  • We are especially interested in applicants with past experience working with diverse individuals involved in the local food movement.
