Overview

Incumbents in the Maintenance Technician I position maintain and repair building finishes, fixtures, mechanical systems, utilities, and equipment. The scope of duties may be highly diversified depending upon the needs of the Taggart Student Center.

Responsibilities

  • Opens the building, turning on lights and checking building systems.
  • Assists with corrective and preventive building maintenance including basic carpentry/finish work, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC, mechanical and other equipment.
  • Assists with the corrective and preventative maintenance of equipment used by the Custodial Team.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of maintenance equipment, parts, and supplies.
  • Conducts field checks of building to analyze and identify corrective and preventive maintenance.
  • Performs snow removal as assigned.
  • May repair safety equipment such as the fire “Exit” signs and emergency doors.
  • Complies with department, University, State, and Federal safety and compliance regulations.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification: 

  • 3-6 months experience with building and equipment maintenance is required.
  • Available to work Monday – Friday, 6:30am – 3:30pm. May include occasional work outside these days/hours.
  • Willingness to learn and maintain a positive attitude. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  2. Customer service skills.
  3. Knowledge of general maintenance processes and methods.
  4. Skilled in the use of hand and power tools common to trade.
  5. Knowledge of carpentry/finish work, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC and other technical skills.
  6. Basic computer skills.
  7. Ability to read and understand equipment manuals to perform required maintenance.
  8. Ability to troubleshoot problems and plan solutions.
  9. Ability to operate cleaning equipment such as vacuums, carpet extractors, floor scrubbers, etc.
  10. Knowledge of cleaning solutions, chemicals, and solvents.
  11. Knowledge of safe work practices.

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting (50 pounds) and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects.  Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
