Overview

The Intramural Instructor will be responsible for planning, organizing, and teaching assigned intramural sports and recreational activities for USU students within the USU Eastern Campus Life Department. This role includes grading, engaging with students, and ensuring they understand course expectations. The ideal candidate will have a passion for promoting physical fitness, wellness, and a positive lifestyle. This class will be a 7-week course for the Spring Semester.

Responsibilities

  • Planning, organizing, and leading one to two classes a week related to the specific intramural sport.
  • Teaching basics and fundamentals, and organizing practices for the first four weeks, then organizing a playoff bracket for the last three weeks of the semester.
  • Collaborating with the Campus Life Department to enhance the intramural program.
  • Following all University policies and procedures for engaging with students during activities.
  • Ensuring all sports equipment is properly maintained, safe, and ready for use.
  • Assessing students' skills, participation, and knowledge throughout the course and providing constructive feedback.
  • Encouraging a welcoming and inclusive environment for all students.
  • Keeping detailed records of class activities and student participation.
  • Staying updated with current trends and practices in intramural sports and recreation.
  • Reviewing the class course fee annually and recommending any necessary adjustments.
  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 1-2 years of experience in related Intramural sport activity.
  • Knowledge of and experience coaching intramural sports.
  • Employment contingent on the successful completion of a back ground check.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong understanding of intramural sport, including rules, regulations, and techniques.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety protocols, first aid, and emergency response strategies related to sports activities.
  • Understanding of effective teaching methods and strategies suitable for sports education.
  • Awareness of university policies and procedures related to student activities and sports programs.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for delivering instructions, safety briefings, and feedback.
  • Excellent organizational skills to plan, coordinate, and execute sports classes, practices, and tournaments.
  • Effective problem-solving skills to handle unexpected situations and emergencies during sports activities.
  • Proficiency in teaching and engaging students in a hands-on learning environment.
  • Competence in using relevant technology and software for scheduling, communication, and documentation.
  • Ability to properly use, maintain, and ensure the safety of sports equipment.
  • Capability to lead and motivate students in sports settings, fostering teamwork and sportsmanship.
  • Ability to participate in and lead physically demanding sports activities.
  • Flexibility to adapt plans based on changing conditions, student needs, or other variables.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making skills, particularly in high-stress or emergency situations.
  • Keen attention to detail in planning activities, ensuring safety, and maintaining equipment.

This position requires moderate physical effort.  Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position, including lifting up to 25 pounds, walking and standing.  Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
