Overview

The successful individual for this position will become a member of the heavy equipment and trucking (HETR) training programs in Blanding, Utah, that are part of the Technical Design and Technical Education (TDTE) Department at Utah State University.

 

This individual is responsible to keep the maintenance schedule and tracking current, complete routine maintenance and repairs for the fleet of heavy trucks, tractor-trailers, construction equipment and heavy equipment. This individual should have a Class A CDL and basic machine operation experience for the sake of maneuvering the vehicles in and out of the service areas.

 

The individual accepting this position must have excellent written and oral skills with the capabilities of using a computer for record keeping, diagnostic equipment, communication, parts and inventory ordering, and other computer related duties. The individual must be able to change duties several times in a day. The individual needs to be safety minded and able to follow instructions with minimum supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Fleet maintenance, troubleshooting and mechanical repairs to the semi-trucks, trailers, heavy equipment and construction equipment.
  • Organize and account for tools, inventory, be accountable for the repair shop set up, scheduling, operations, safety, and maintenance.
  • Assist student learning with HETR or other associated programs and other duties assigned by director.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • A verifiable background/experience in heavy truck and heavy equipment maintenance or mechanics (one year minimum)
  • A Class A Commercial Driver’s License with none of the following restrictions: air brake, standard transmission, and fifth wheel (the license should not have a restriction for these three things) or must be able to obtain one within three months of hire
  • A clean background and pass a background check in relation to the position per university requirements
  • Skills to record repairs and maintenance associated with heavy equipment and truck fleet maintenance for record keeping
  • The ability to communicate effectively and convey information verbally and in writing
  • A mindset to be a team player who excels at building trusting relationships with customers, students and co-workers
  • Work habits and attitude that reflect a dependable, responsible contributor committed to excellence and success
  • Computer skills and be familiar with Microsoft word (for typing documents), excel (for tracking or data entry), and outlook (email)
  • Ability to adapt to changing conditions or work assignments
  • An excellent safety attitude and able to follow instructions with minimal supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three years’ experience with Heavy equipment and or heavy truck maintenance and/or mechanic duties
  • Certificate in hydraulics, heavy equipment or heavy truck maintenance or repair, diesel technology, from an accredited school/program or (will consider something closely associated or equivalent)
  • Parts inventory tracking and ordering (one year experience or more)
  • Engine, transmission, hydraulics mechanic experience (one year experience or more)
