Overview

The Controller is responsible for management and direction of all operational functions involved with the processing, accounting, and reporting of financial transactions of the University; representing Finance and Administrative Services with pertinent proposals and presentations to university executive leaders and the Board of Trustees Audit, Risk, and Compliance Committee; and playing a significant role in the professional development of Financial Officers and Business Services teams.

Responsibilities

The Controller reports to the Vice President for Finance and Administrative Services. This position is a single incumbent administrative level position and supervises full, part-time, and student employees.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Lead a management team that is responsible for the operational areas including general accounting, financial reporting, accounts payable, purchasing and contract services, treasury services, Bursar’s Office, payroll, federal and state compliance, and financial systems control.
  • Represent Finance and Administrative Services in providing expertise and resolution on matters pertaining to the financial operations of the university to USU administrators and the Board of Trustees Audit, Risk, and Compliance Committee.
  • In partnership with the Director of Budget and Planning, play an integral role in the professional development of Financial Officers and Business Services teams, to maximize the impact of financial management and support services provided to all university departments.
  • Liaise with external auditors, consultants, internal personnel, and other constituents as needed, to perform the administrator duties of the Controller position.
  • Present the annual financial report and audit results to the Board of Trustees Audit, Risk, and Compliance Committee, as directed by the Vice President for Finance and Administrative Services.
  • Collaborate with the University Budget and Planning Office on financial data and with Business Services to implement financial procedures and internal controls institution wide.
  • Perform a variety of special projects and other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Finance and Administrative Services.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with a minimum of 7 years of progressive experience.

  • Excellent technical knowledge and proficiency of accounting standards.
  • Ability to research and improve processes and methods for areas of responsibility.

  • Strong customer service focuses with an emphasis on outreach to departments and the ability to listen to and understand business needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with ability to function as a team player who can interact with others at all levels to accomplish goals in an efficient, productive, and collaborative manner.
  • Ability to work with all levels in the organization.
  • Ability to multitask daily and manage numerous requests.
  • Ability to work well independently.
  • Proven problem-solving skills, and proactive in problem solving.
  • Ability to distill and act on feedback from a variety of sources.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization skills, working in an environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Possess a high degree of initiative, attention to detail and follow-through, as well as the ability to adjust to changing requirements and priorities.
