Overview

The Associate Athletic Trainer/Head Football Athletic Trainer (Athletic Trainer III) provides advanced athletic training services specific to the Utah State University football student athletes. This position emphasizes leadership, mentorship, and administrative responsibilities while ensuring compliance with university, affiliated conference, and the NCAA regulations. This position will enhance the development of health and safety policies and procedures related to Utah State University Sports Medicine.

Responsibilities

Sport coverage

  • Provide direct care for football student athletes, including prevention, evaluation, treatment, and emergency response to injuries.

  • Ensure proper implementation of health care protocols and activate Emergency Action Plans (EAPs) as required.

  • Oversee practice, event coverage, and team travel.

  • Maintain doctor relationships for additional services and student-athlete care.

Administrative duties

  • Maintain accurate medical records in compliance with university, NCAA, and NATABOC guidelines.
  • Complete injury and incident reports for accountability and documentation.
  • Manage administrative duties and supervise assistant athletic trainers.

Leadership and Supervision

  • Lead, supervise, and mentor athletic training residents and assistant athletic trainers.
  • Assign tasks, set goals, practice and game responsibilities, and evaluate program needs.
  • Assist assistant athletic trainers with setting goals and help them achieve those goals.
  • Set performance standards and evaluate performance of assistant athletic trainers.

Communication

  • Maintain effective communication with student athletes, all football coaches, strength and conditioning coaches, physicians, sports medicine staff, nutritional staff, mental wellness staff, and administration regarding student-athlete status participation, and care plans.
  • Mentor staff in communication strategies and conflict resolution.

Continuing Education/Professional Development

  • Maintain necessary certifications to practice in the state of Utah and the NCAA through conferences, certifications, and research.
  • Develop expertise in specialized areas and mentor others in these areas.
  • Participate in professional organizations and committees at local, regional, or national levels.

Working Conditions

  • Evening and weekend work required.
  • May involve transporting student athletes and team travel.
  • Exposure to bodily fluids and confidential student records.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds.

Decision-Making Authority

  • Make independent decisions on an athlete’s care following NATABOC and university guidelines.
  • Provide leadership in supervising and mentoring staff.
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA, conference, and university guidelines.

This position requires a commitment to maintaining NCAA Division I compliance and adherence to all university and department rules.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Athletic Training or related field.
  • 8 years of experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC), including 3 years of experience as a football athletic trainer at a Division I level.
  • Current NATABOC certification.
  • Current CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer certification.
  • Eligibility for Utah state licensure.
  • Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Commitment to promoting inclusion and diversity.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Division I athletics.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in high-pressure environments.

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting (50 pounds) and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting.
