Overview

The Department of Technology, Design, and Technical Education (TDTE) at Utah State University (USU) currently has an opening for a full-time professional academic advisor for technical education at the USU Eastern campus in Price. The primary responsibility will be providing academic advising for students who are interested in and enrolled in technical certificates and associate of applied science degree programs. Additionally, about 25% of the role will include marketing and recruiting for technical education programs.

 

It is anticipated that the individual selected for this advising position will start in March of 2025.  This is a full-time, exempt staff position located on the USU Eastern campus in Price. This position’s primary role assignment will be advising undergraduate students in the technical education certificate and AAS degree programs. It is expected that advising will primarily occur in-person and occasionally, as needed to meet student needs, via distance technologies. This position will be supervised by the associate department head for technical education at USU Eastern.

Responsibilities

  • Assist students in the process of developing an academic program of study and semester class schedules.
  • Assist students in the development of their educational goals, including the selection of a major, meeting graduation requirements, participating in experiential learning opportunities, and exploring the possibility of further education (e.g., stackable and/or graduate degrees).
  • Help students understand the expected standards of achievement and likelihood of success in areas of study as well as providing them information about alternatives, limitations, and possible consequences of academic decisions.
  • Track students' academic progress and inform them of their status.
  • Provide students with correct up-to-date academic information about university graduation requirements.
  • Prepare student graduation applications for Dean approval in Degree works.
  • Become competent with tools that assist students in deciding on and completing a degree program (e.g., Degree Finder, Degree Works, etc.).
  • Maintain familiarity with available campus resources and refer students to these resources to meet individual needs.
  • Work closely with department, program, and industry leaders to recruit and retain high quality students.
  • Coordinate with college, campus, and university marketing and communication teams in developing appropriate and approved marketing materials for technical education programs.
  • Assist potential students in the admission process for certificate and associate.
  • Recommended students for a variety of awards and scholarships.
  • Maintain and update student files.
  • Participate in assessment activities related to student retention and completion.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies.
  • Assist in other areas as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong desire to help students succeed.

Preferred requirements:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and understanding of, or ability to learn, University IT systems including DegreeWorks and Banner.
  • Expertise in student development and academic planning.
  • Familiarity with major-specific advising and graduation requirements.
  • Creative problem-solving and multitasking abilities.
  • Effective interpersonal skills via various communication channels.
  • Knowledge of course schedules and curriculum.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Verbal and written communication skills and effective public speaking skills including ability to communicate with individuals as well as groups.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple demands and changing needs.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment.
  • Ability to work with students in 1:1 or group advising settings.
  • Ability to learn and maintain current knowledge of complex program requirements, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to work with diverse student backgrounds.
  • Ability to develop and/or deliver programs.
  • Knowledge of and proficiency in a variety of current and emerging technology platforms.
